People very rarely die just driving a car there is usually themselves or another car breaking laws and regulations. There is enough airbags and seatbelts and just the design of cars to survive pretty powerful wrecks. But we do have those rules in place to minimize the chances as much as possible that death will occur. In North Carolina we require cars to be fit for driving with an annual inspection which is as much about being safe for other drivers than yourself. Turn signals working and lights working are really for the other car and not the driver.
