Re: Just in asu going back to Camilla
Very disappointed in Camilla bowl. I did not like Montgomery at all. YES I went last year and was not impressed with anything but our football team and our fans! The reason the aviator sold out of beer is because it is the only place downtown to go to...! The stadium is so small it's like being in a WWE cage match . I have been in high school stadiums that were nicer and more spacious. Appreciate the opponent but feel like our student atheletes and fans deserve a much better bowl game venue.
You just won the Sun Belt Conference title and a free trip to ....Montgomery, AL ....wait.. what? Not very exciting for a SA.
At least Chatt, TN was for a national championship. And yes I was there for those too.

If people focus on what Montgomery is instead of what it isn't, they'll have a good time. You're right, it's not Disney World or the French Quarter. But it's got a few fun bars and restaurants, some cool historical sites, a downtown that's incredibly easy to navigate (read: no traffic), and a great tailgating/FanFest setup.JTApps1 wrote:Did you go last year? It might not be a family destination like Orlando or all out party scene like New Orleans, but they'll roll out the red carpet for us and the game will be great.
Do you want to spend five days there? No. But for a weekend? You bet.

Re: Just in asu going back to Camilla
Exactly! The fact that there are a handful of bars & restaurants in close proximity to each other insured that all of App Nation was together. It's what made it a ton of fun last year.EastHallApp wrote:JTApps1 wrote:Did you go last year? I visited Sammy Stephens at his world famous Flea Market that happens to be just like a Mini Mall in 2008ish. I still have my personalized autographed 8 x 10. If for no other reason, I should go to Montgomery for a reunion with that blessed and talented gentleman. hey hey

Re: Just in asu going back to Camilla
Just because you are disappointed and could travel to any bowl doesn't mean the players are. They get a chance to take on a team that wasn't far off from competing for the NY6. This is likely a match up of two of the top 8 G5 teams. Toledo is a great football team and aside from Ohio, consistently brings fans to games. Should be a fun atmosphere and while Montgomery isn't a destination, the team has plenty to learn from last years game.ah59396 wrote:I'm quite sure plenty of them are disappointed. Despite what you or I would like to believe, plenty of these kids play just to have fun and reap the "rewards" of playing college football. You honestly don't think they'd rather go to Orlando as opposed to Montgomery (again)?WataugaMan wrote:Hard to believe the players are complaining. This is a step up for sure, Toledo is a very good team. I'm excited, definitely should be a great game. Looking forward for sure!!
I assure you there is no happier football team right now than ODU. Those kids get a free trip to the Bahamas.
App has a chance to seperate itself from Southern in that they could be the first football program to win a bowl in their first two years at FBS and they are now the first team to go to back to back bowls following their first year.

Re: Just in asu going back to Camilla
Yes I did. Game was great food was wonderful. Montgomery is a crap hole. Zero night life after the game to celebrate. Half the town is boarded up. We saw a few cool historical things, capital building/Rosa parks bus stop. Outside of that, it's a dump.JTApps1 wrote:Did you go last year? Re: Just in asu going back to Camilla
Bowl games are meant as a reward to the team for a season well played, to the Fans to enjoy the destination, and for the hosting City to showcase their town. Last year was exciting cause it was our first bowl game ever, and Montgomery did a great job. This year we improved and won a share of the conference, what's the reward? Going back to Montgomery, don't get me wrong I'll be there, I think we just wanted some different scenery to party in. Toledo is a great opponent, but how much name recognition does Toledo have, will it help in our recruiting? Like I said I'm not sour, but this is our super bowl, due to the fact that G5 schools will never make the playoffs until some expansion occurs. Montgomery is an easy drive, I hope all of APP Nation attends. My heart tells me there may be less fans there this year due to the same venue, last year was historic, this year has a better opponent but will it be enough to draw the crowds?

Camellia Bowl - App/Toledo - (Great match-up, will be a tough game)
Cure Bowl - Ark St/UCF - (Personally UCF does nothing for me, no wonder the Arky St fans are up in arms)
New Orleans Bowl - Louisiana/So Miss (Congrats to Lala and thanks for beating Arky St)
Tater Bowl - Idaho/Colorado St (Interesting, Go Taters)
Dollar General - Troy/Ohio (Looks familiar, should be a good game)
Arizona Bowl - So. Ala/Air Force (Interesting/Head Scratcher)

Not sure (somebody help me out here), but, I believe they won the MAC last season. And, this year they are the runner up to Cotton Bowl bound, Western Michigan. Plenty of recognition, for sure.
PS - A hell lot more recognition than Central Florida, but, that's just me.

Didn't win the MAC last year but did spend much of the season in the top 25 after beating Arkansas. Also beat AAC runner-up Temple in their bowl game to finish 10-2. (Would have been 11-2 but they had an FCS game canceled.)WataugaMan wrote:"Toledo is a great opponent, but how much name recognition does Toledo have"

Doubt they have more recognition than UCF though - that's one of the biggest schools in the country, playing in the best G5 league, and they pounded Baylor in the Fiesta Bowl just a few years ago.

Re: Just in asu going back to Camilla
Yes - they went for a National Championship game. Where App could walk away with a championship. Here we get to walk away with an invite to come back to the same exact bowl game as we'll go to next year. Snore.JTApps1 wrote:I would remind the players that our National Championship teams went to Chatty 3 years in a row and nobody complained. Same goes to the fans. Everyone needs to focus on the game not the city. Toledo is a better team than anyone else in the SBC is playing this year. Just ask Ark. State about them.boonetown1 wrote:No way our players are excited, a couple have already commented. As much as we piss and moan, think about how much this stinks for the players....Time for the coaches to motivate our players to win this bowl.

Re: Just in asu going back to Camilla
So many times the bowl games come down to what team wants to be there more. If it is true that some of our players are having negative thoughts about this game, that is a recipe for a loss. Toledo is going to be the best G5 team we play, and its not even close. Initial thoughts up here is that the Rockets are happy to be in this game.

Re: Just in asu going back to Camilla
100% spot on. Many are fine with this bowl. Good for them. I disagree. Conference co-championship leads to this? The Sun Belt champion not being tied to a specific bowl makes me pine for the days of possibly four additional home games at KBS plus a trip to Chatty for a CHAMPIONSHIP.Appst87sigep wrote:Very disappointed in Camilla bowl. Re: Just in asu going back to Camilla
On January 7, 2014, UCF was ranked No. 10 in the seasons final AP Poll, the highest ranking in school history. Number 10 in the nation just 2 years ago. Dante Culpepper, Blake Bortles, Brandon Marshall, Latavious Murray, Asante Samuel are all football alums. Its also the largest school in the state of Florida. The brand and name recognition isn't even close in my opinion.

Re: Just in asu going back to Camilla
The whole system leaves me scratching my head:
1) New Orleans appears to be the most desirable bowl and location, but it's basically the ULL (or closest substitute) Bowl, and we need not apply unless a massive hurricane or earthquake wipes out the entire gulf coast.
2) The least regarded (6-6 opponent, no ESPN) bowl went to our worst team last year and our Co-Champion this year.
3) The matchup with the SBC Co-Champion and highest quality opponent (MAC #2) and televised by ESPN is held in the least desirable location, and pays a tiny fraction of what the other bowls pay (I'm aware all money goes into the conference pot, but "What's in Our Wallet?).
