The secondary calls itself the Legion of Boone and I think that suits the whole defense pretty well.

Zombie defense makes them sound sluggish and mindless (running zombies are the downfall of the genre). It's just not a good description of the way this D can fly to the ball IMO.

Panther secondary went with Legion of Whom (that was kind of funny). Legion of Boone is witty but I agree, kind of copy catish. This nickname thing tends to become unavoidable when a team begins to gain some notoriety. I know the players dig it but I kind of prefer that the team just kick ass on the field and let their actions do the talking.

Zombie Defense is ok for Halloween, but should definitely go away afterwards. I actually like "Rock Wall Defense" best of those I've heard.

Zombie isn't a term of endearment, usually referring to things as mindless, wandering things without thought. Not exactly the best way to describe one of the best defenses in the FBS.

Legion of Boone is more appropriate, hell you could sell merchandise on that one.

I recall a really cool T-shirt we had back in the 80's. It was in the style of a rock band tour. I can't remember the year but on the back was our schedule with the outcomes. The top read something like- Appalachian State Football Kick Ass Tour. I agree, if there isn't some crazy trademark issue the school could sell a boatload of shirts with Legion of Boone! I would love a piece of that pie.

How about the "Brutal Black" Defense. That's the way they attack opponent offenses, especially when dressed as they were versus the Stink last Thursday.

1 zombie alone can't do much and is easily overpowered, yes.

But a group of Zombies acting as a unit can swarm, destroy and generally tear sh*t up. That's what our defense does, hence the nickname

Black Death, Rock Wall, Gold Rush, Black Curtain and several others listed here are all pretty good. The Zombie thing is the stupidest ish I've ever seen this board come up with. And that says a lot!
