Re: Official Skunk Bear prediction thread
I see a repeat of Georgia last year. We will move the ball well but peter out somewhere around the 20 when we can't spread the D.
If we can score early we beat the spread. Our chances decrease as the game progresses. I am proud to be a Mountaineer and am looking forward to watching our boys go for broke. Give 'em HELL APPS!!!!

Great to have this back because it means football is here!bigCasu wrote:The long wait is finally over. In a mere three days, Appalachian Football will finally play its first game as an FBS program against the exact same opponent that catapulted them to the upper echelon of college football. Likely, they are plenty of moments that contributed to this moment in time, but that football game seven years ago took support to another level and opened the door to the present day. On the new and improved Sun Belt schedule there are a plenty of teams that Appalachian will be playing for the first time and a couple familiar faces from years past. Georgia Southern and Appalachian will quickly educate their new peers about the hate and respect each program has for the other. Liberty and Appalachian have played sparingly over the years. Appalachian and Troy played twice in the same year back in 1999, with each team winning on the others home field. And, yeah, Appalachian played Michigan back in 2007.

I don't see us beating Michigan because we don't have a ton of NFL players in our senior and junior classes like that team, we don't have Armanti Edwards, and Michigan won't be overlooking us.kiddbrewer wrote:Back in '07, I was sitting in the upper nose bleed, just off the endzone where Rauch kicked the game winning field goal. I'm not going to say that this year. We're walking in with nearly 20 more scholarship players, more FBS recruits in our 2 deep, the ability to play more than 27 players, and most importantly, I think our players have something to prove...last year was a fluke. App will step up and pull out a victory.

I don't see us winning this game but I do think we play closer than the spread, unless MIchigan's young highly touted recruits are a little better than the hype and they just pound us. I still to this day wonder if we beat them back in 2007 if Mike Hart doesn't leave the game. That first drive was dominance and exactly what I expected the first half to be but when he came out that was a huge blow to them that I believe cost them the game. Hopefully I'm wrong but I'll say Michigan 35 App 14.
I don't think last year was a fluke because we had a new staff, lots of injuries, and our players were not in good shape. It just wasn't our year. It was tough seeing us lose to Charleston Southern and NC A&T. There is NO excuse for those losses though. The fact that a bunch of players we did not think were good enough to play for us came to Boone and beat us was pathetic and I hope it never happens again.
I do think we are going to be better this year for sure because we are in better shape, have more talent, and I don't think the Sun Belt is very good outside of ULM, ASU, and ULL. We can win 5-6 games this year. We should beat Georgia State, Campbell, and Liberty and then Georgia Southern, Idaho, Troy, and Southern Miss are all very winnable games. We should win at leas 5 games this year. That's why I have been saying Scott is gone if he doesn't win at least 4 games because 3 of our games are easy wins and then he just needs to coach pretty well against USM, Troy, Idaho, and Georgia Southern on top of Ga St, Campbell, and Liberty and we should have a 6, maybe 7, win season. I'm not projecting that because I think we are great but I don't think USM, Idaho, Troy, and the others are above 100 or so in the FBS. The only top 80 teams that I think we have on schedule is ULM, ULL, and Michigan.

I dont think you can measure the success/failure of this season based solely on wins/losses. I think we can win 4 games this year and still be markedly better than last year. I like the direction we are trending towards, new SC coach, by all reports have the kids in much better shape, SS and the coaching staff have a year under their belt and the kids seem to be on the same page with them, and this years recruiting, atleast on paper, seems to be a success. I want them to win just as bad as the next guy, but the reality is, we need patience, and hopefully, we will see positive results down the road.

This is the key and unfortunately it is a huge advantage for them. We will be relying on a number of young and/or inexperienced WRs. Unless we can run the ball, it could be a long day. Hard to quarrel with the current spread. I would imagine before all is said and done Michigan wins by 3-4 TDs.firemoose wrote:I know most have been talking about the battle in the trenches and that's where most wars are won but to me one of the most important match ups will be Kam/WR's vs the CB's. Michigan has two of the best CB's in Countess and Taylor. Countess led the B1G in INT's last year. Kam has to make good decisions on ball placement to keep them away. And the third DB to watch is last years #1 DB and #2-#4 overall recruit in the nation in Jabrill Peppers. From all reports he's been blowing it up in camp and he's also their PR. He's a threat to take it back every time he touches it. I just hope we kick away from him or it could be a long day in the return game.

Early season jitters and memories on both sides will make this a low scoring affair.

+1 to everything in the above post.moehler wrote:I dont think you can measure the success/failure of this season based solely on wins/losses. Also bottom line is we have nothing to lose in the UM game. Just as last time we are not supposed to win. If we do we get huge exposure. Even if UM flat hammers us it will get very little play (beyond game broadcast) and people will pay almost no attention (outside of their desperate for something positive fan base) because who cares if UM beats App State, let's see what they do with Ohio State. It's only a measure of their team if they lose. So let's stay healthy and play hard.
Re: Official Skunk Bear prediction thread
Yep, winning is secondary to our goals this week, if we can play them tough, make it a game late in the third, and keep the score relatively close, with the final score respectable, 17-21 points, and get out of there healthy, I will be happy, please let our OL have the game of their lives!!!
