If Pinkney is still recovering from injury, hope he can redshirt... given we are loaded at WR, be nice to have 3 more years after this year
While I take your point, the guy is starting his third year of college and hasn't played a snap yet. At some point I think the need to get on the field outweighs the value of preserving college eligibility until his mid-20s.
Also since last year didn't count, I think he would still technically have three years remaining after this year regardless.
If the guy is still injured (which was the point), he should not be on the field unless healthy no matter how many years he has been in college. If he chooses to continue to play until mid-20s, that is his choice and the coaching staff's choice. If we are stacked at receiver and this guy is good (which I have no idea one way or the other) and he is not going to be 100%, no reason to put him on the field. I do not want anyone on the field if they can further risk injury if he is not fully healthy.
Gotcha. Yes, he shouldn't play until he's ready, and theoretically it would be nice if he could get a RS if somehow he is unable to play all year.
My understanding, though, is that 1) he's been practicing (not sure if limited), and 2) his redshirt at VT was not for injury reasons, which would mean he wouldn't be eligible for a second RS season.
