Re: Donnie Holt
Thomasville, for sure! L-R for sure! I had the good fortune to have been at all four of the aforementioned games. Great memories.scatman77 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 01, 2018 7:24 pmI believe Donnie played at Thomasville High. The fight in the “far end zone” was probably the L-R game at tonight. We ran up 625 yards total offense. Their linebacker and our fullback (both of whom I know) started the fight with 0:16 left. It was fun for sure!Cro-Magnon App wrote: ↑Thu Nov 01, 2018 7:09 pmPlayed football and basketball against Donnie in high school. He became a good friend at ASU. He played at Lexington. Super swell guy and was a really good basketball player. And was in the middle of that fight in the far end zone when the students came over the wall and I cannot remember the opponent.
Not to hijack this thread, but ... There aren't a lot of us around the MMB that remember the always *red-hot* rivalry with L-R. Football and basketball games were almost always good for some fisticuffs between the two teams. The benches would clear and it took a while to restore order and resume play. The "activity" would, upon rare occasion, pull in fans and spill over into the street and parking lots. Mischief of some sort between the two schools was ongoing. "Legend" has it that a group of Apps athletes once stole their way into L-R's Shuford Gym and "kidnapped" Joe Bear (the stuffed and mounted Southern Appalachian black bear) that is L-R's mascot. This was in retribution for L-R's break-in at Broome-Kirk Gym and the complete destruction of the bronze statue of "Yosef with his long rifle" (commissioned and donated by Ike Belk) that proudly guarded the entrance.
During the 60s through the mid-80s, the restrooms at Antlers (now Bistro-Roca) in BR had nice calligraphy pen & ink signs over the toilets with the message..."Please flush, L-R needs water."

Re: Donnie Holt
My mis-remembering. It was Thomasville with big Ira Love playing at LB. A great team on the gridiron and hardwood. They had some of those boys out of the orphanage that could really play. It was a tough conference - Statesville, Lexington, Thomasville, Salisbury, Asheboro, A. L. Brown (Kannapolis), Concord and South Rowan.

Re: Donnie Holt
I was at all four games (even though old age CRS caused me to mis speak about the ECU game location). Urban legend has it that we were bowl bound, until Western beat us. That may be the only consolation they have as a program in their many lopsided losses against App. I often ponder events like that and wonder where we might be today if we had ended up in the Tangerine Bowl in 75.

Re: Donnie Holt
You are correct; Tangerine Bowl reps were in Culloweed to watch. A win would have pretty much earned us a spot. Instead we imploded and laid a big egg. The "consolation game" next week vs. Davidson wasn't enough for our recovery despite the 50-7 win.wncapp78 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 02, 2018 12:05 amI was at all four games (even though old age CRS caused me to mis speak about the ECU game location). We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

Re: Donnie Holt
One of L-R's backs Scott McWhorter would run by the App sidelines during warm up talking smack. He only did it for a short time as the Brakefield Bone stuck it in his ear!asu66 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 01, 2018 9:33 pmThomasville, for sure! L-R for sure!
