Well I will tell you this from personal experience - my team shared a conference championship and we cherished the "conference championship" trophy, we were conference champs, we had the t-shirts and trophies to celebrate - I have also had teams who finished 2nd and believe me there isn't anywhere near the satisfaction --- Go ask our players and coaches if they would rather share the SunBelt title or finish 2nd - I'm not talking 20 years down the road - I am talking right now - Just as my players and coaches worked their asses off to win a conference championship, multiply that 10 times over to what our football players, coaches and staff have done and I will absolutely DAMN WELL GUARANTEE you they will cherish it 3 weeks from now ---Goapps15 wrote:A shared title is wonderful 20 years down the road, right now it means next to nothing.WVAPPeer wrote:Well then root for Troy or Ark St to finish undefeated --- a shared title is worlds ahead of a 2nd place finish ---Goapps15 wrote:I don't want to back into a conference title.

IF Troy and A State each lose at least one game and we win out, then the three of us have an equal number of wins...how is that "backing into" a championship?? It's going to be this way until the format changes in the Sun Belt...if we share the championship then that'll be an amazing accomplishment to this deserving team...I've got to get off this board...Goapps15 wrote:I don't want to back into a conference title.

Troy wasn't overly polished in our game either. Lucky for them we screwed up even more. Thursday will be a tough test for Troy with a short week coming off an emotional win.Saint3333 wrote:Troy just got ranked 25th, which tells me the pollsters respect our program as well. A mentally prepared Troy beats Ark St, but I predict it's going to be an ugly game, like most Ark St game are.
Since it is unlikely we can win the league at this point I'm hoping Troy wins out and WMU loses to put Troy in the Cotton Bowl. We can use the cash!

We can agree to disagree. I'll agree with one thing it does help immediately with recruiting.WVAPPeer wrote:Well I will tell you this from personal experience - my team shared a conference championship and we cherished the "conference championship" trophy, we were conference champs, we had the t-shirts and trophies to celebrate - I have also had teams who finished 2nd and believe me there isn't anywhere near the satisfaction --- Go ask our players and coaches if they would rather share the SunBelt title or finish 2nd - I'm not talking 20 years down the road - I am talking right now - Just as my players and coaches worked their asses off to win a conference championship, multiply that 10 times over to what our football players, coaches and staff have done and I will absolutely DAMN WELL GUARANTEE you they will cherish it 3 weeks from now ---Goapps15 wrote:A shared title is wonderful 20 years down the road, right now it means next to nothing.WVAPPeer wrote:Well then root for Troy or Ark St to finish undefeated --- a shared title is worlds ahead of a 2nd place finish ---Goapps15 wrote:I don't want to back into a conference title.

Don't really understand your response but I'm not offended, I'm just frustrated. If we had won all of our conference games and A State did as well, guess what? We'd be sharing a title. I don't have the details but I know a lot (or several at least) of those Southern Conference Championships we won were shared, does that affect anything? Do we put an asterisk on those years or tell those players, yeah you were champions but you had to share it? No, we acknowledge their accomplishment of being champions and cheer them on. Until the Sun Belt is able to change the format in 2018, shared championships is going to stay a thing, and I hope that our guys will get to reach that goal this year. Obviously, being alone at the top is the ultimate goal but, again, it's amazing that we've been in title contention consistently after just entering the FBS...Goapps15 wrote:Because we didn't head to head. Re: Still a shot ---
I cover HSFB and in the second-to-last week, there was a game between one of the teams I cover and the other top team in the conference and they lost. The next week, the team who won was upset so my team backdoor'ed into being conference co-champs. They celebrated and went nuts. They didn't feel any less because they had to rely on another team to help them. Both teams finished 7-1.
App back-door'ed into a SoCon co-title in 2007 with a 5-2 record with Wofford and in 2012 with Wofford and Georgia Southern with a 6-2 league mark. Those banners are still up and those trophies are right next to the other ones in the Athletics Center.

That was exactly the point that I was about to make. Thanks for providing the details! I'm sure that everyone would have preferred an outright championship, but IF we wind up with a share of the title, it is absolutely something to be proud of. In 2013, Arkansas State's title was shared with ULL but they certainly still include that year in their bragging rights when talking about their string of championships.T-Dog wrote:I cover HSFB and in the second-to-last week, there was a game between one of the teams I cover and the other top team in the conference and they lost. I feel dirty saying this, but I'd rather pull for GaSo against Troy than for stAte against Troy. In fact, I hope stAte loses to both Troy and the Cajuns and finished 3rd in the conference. I'm ok with finishing 2nd in the conference at this point, Troy probably would get the NO bowl either way.

It's fine man. We both just want to win. We both want to go 8-0. Re: Still a shot ---
A little late here, but here's my take: I would have no issues "backing into" a share of the title, other than that obviously I'd rather have gone 8-0.
To me, a Sun Belt title has two main benefits: 1) The players get their rings and get to put a trophy in the case, and 2) we don't have to hear anymore about how we haven't won a Sun Belt title.
Otherwise, winning this conference at 7-1 vs. finishing second at 7-1 isn't really a big deal IMO. Nobody outside the Sun Belt cares who wins the Sun Belt. It's not going to be a big factor in our program's long-term growth. (Western Kentucky never won a Sun Belt title, yet they've moved on and are already one of the top G5 programs in the nation.) Overall record, bowl appearances/wins and getting some statement OOC wins are all more important there (again, IMO). And since our only rival in this league is currently a dumpster fire, I don't think braggin' rights is much of an issue at the moment.
So, in so far as winning the Sun Belt is important, winning a share of it would get the job done. It would be a fine accomplishment for the players and coaches who have put in so much good work the past few years.
