You are right it wasn't in college, he has only coached on the offensive side of the ball in college. He was told as the Grad Assistant at Auburn to do offense if he wanted to be a head coach. His position in high school was on defense. Once again, this is what I recollect from one of his early pressers way back in December. I understand playing on the defensive side of the ball is different than coaching in the college ranks, but it isn't like he has no clue at all what a defense does. The guy is smart and once played the position. Which, to the point, is probably more than most the posters on this board that seem to know more about defense than our DC does.

I don't see how you become an offensive "genius" without understanding defense. Anyway , Drink hired Roof , they rise or fall together.

This. If you didn't understand defense how would you know what play to call based upon what the defense is trying to do.
