Game Notes vs Charlotte and game discussion

I don’t do expectations but I went into the game with things I wanted to see. I like what I saw and I’m encouraged that the foundation to build upon is there. I’m just not ready to declare all is well. While we looked good, is Charlotte a good litmus test? We could have just beat a really shitty team.

I feel the same way but I can’t say that if this was with the same coaching staff as last year we would have won.

Same staff as last year what would our roster have looked like? Early results indicates we landed some talent in the free agent market. Would the former regime have been able to do the same? Since this is the new world it’s all about restructuring and making new pieces work quickly.

When people criticize Coach Dlo for talking about the NFL and name dropping all the time....I realize it's a recruiting tactic. If you are a player and want to get in the NFL then you look at the best path. Maybe you know you'll be a second or third string at Alabama, Clemson, Ohio St..... But you look at App and see the coach name dropping. You then realize there is 90+ years of NFL experience on this coaching staff. You realize you can start, or at least compete to start, at App. The coaches have connections to the NFL. They will practice like an NFL team. You(as a a player) know if you can just get on the field they will see your potential.... And the connections can help get you where you want and need to be. It just makes sense we went this direction.

Fair question. The old staff is gone so no need to get far in the weeds over it. Folks can feel about the difference the way they want. All I’ll say is this years staff WAS going to look different regardless.

That is how I feel. All we know is that we look better coached but we still have a lot of things to clean up. It would be crazy to talk playoffs, SBC title, losing Loggains because he is going to have a huge year, etc at this point. Too much we don't know. Could we be a top 25 team this year? Sure. It is just way too early to even know because, like you said, Charlotte is one of the 3-4 worst teams we will play.

Call me crazy. Heck, I have been waiting to see a well-coached team for too long, so I am going all in after just one game against a terrible opponent. And the best part is that I get to keep these over inflated views for a least another week because we will dominate next week.

I try to keep a level head because I don't want to get grey hair too soon. We made a lot of errors that would have gotten us beat if we played someone good. The biggest thing I take from the game is that from a speed and talent standpoint we showed to be superior so if we can clean up some things we have a chance to be good.

We really don’t know how bad Charlotte is. They had the same offseason changes and constraints as App, pulling a few more transfers from the same portal. They have a good coach who knows ball, and knows ball players.

I wouldn’t write them off on this one game. I also wouldn’t bet on App getting back to 10 wins on this one game.

100%. We won’t have a good idea either way until after USM, Boise, Oregon State, and Georgia State. If we are 5-1 or 6-0 then I will feel like we have a great shot at 10 wins. It is just too early, like you said.

Last year we couldn’t even put ETSU away. Beating a shitty team is what we’re supposed to do and we did it.

Not saying this is a perfect team by any means, but I watched a decent amount of Sun Belt over the weekend. There’s no reason this team can’t compete for the Sun Belt title this season. Regardless of opponent, this team passes the eye test in a way the last few App teams did not.

I think Charlotte could be decent later this season.

Albin is a good coach and is easily the best coach Charlotte has ever had. You can see what Charlotte wants to do (bully ball, physical defense up front), but they shot themselves in the foot several times with pre-snap penalties and the QB missing the receiver and avoiding contact.

Thinking back on the game, the thing that stands out the most is the defense.

Flying to the ball like I haven’t seen since 2019.

Most of us are primarily gauging what we saw from App Friday night versus what we saw last year. From that perspective, we have reason to be cautiously optimistic.

My hope is our players stay healthy, humble and focused.

As far as talent goes, App has had a team that should compete for a Sun Belt title every year for the past 11 years. Clark even managed to get to the CCG twice in four full seasons.

What we are seeing now is the effect of quality coaching on talented players.

Recruiting was awful. That is what happens when you hire bad people in that department and I don't think the coaches were pushed to work harder than they were. It felt like they all gave up. So far I am liking what I am seeing and hearing from the new staff.

I had heard from a head coach that Wo was not looking a lot of kids they have proven they could play at this level. You had to come to their camp or you weren't taken seriously .I don't know if they were giving up on some kids as much as they were being outworked .

Makes me think the opposite of Drink when he was satisfied with Charlotte hanging 41 on us because he felt we were never at risk of losing.
