TRANSFER COMMIT:

https://247sports.com/player/jj-kohl-46101552/

What I do not understand is why he goes from a 4 Star at Iowa State to a 3 Star when he transfers to Appalachian.

Maybe since his dad runs a kicking school he can drop back and drop kick it through the uprights.
Good question. Guess when he moves down to a G5 team, a star gets dropped. Such BS.

Not really any comments on the huge QB transfer. Obviously he has to show something but wow. How about trying him at tight end?

Biggest commitment and recruit in our history. Blue bloods were trying to flip him out of high school away from ISU. I noted to maybe see what he could do at TE or at goal line packages, but if he’s as good as people say he is, he might be QB1 and no looking back. A good problem to have when your QB room is 2-3 deep!

Nice to see the OL from Loris, SC. Maybe Loggains could make that SC connection as I’m sure he has a lot of friends/teammates playing in the area.

We have three potential QBs and got some OL commits, solid week for the staff.

People are hesitant with so many unknowns in this era, couple that with the hype train from inside the administration followed by a let down last season you aren’t likely to see a fanbase shooting for the stars.

Just curious, how many were trying to flip him while in the portal? To me, high school should be discounted as that process is in the past to a certain degree.
Although it seems like a good pickup, I would be more interested in what schools offered him while in the portal...any Power schools? etc. ...or maybe this was a done deal when he entered the portal due to past relationship with Coach DLo.
Hopefully he or one of the QBs turn out to be elite QBs.

Understand and agree, slightly discount Hs but it was only 2-2.5 years ago. Michigan and Auburn were 2 that tried to flip him late in the cycle in HS. Not so sure about who offered him in the portal other than FIU but I’m sure he had a few suitors being a recent high 4* with offers from pretty much every Big10 school. He may have silently visited or had a visit set up to NC State according to some of Pack fans on their boards.

Hope to hear from a couple of guys today or tomorrow. Our momentum is strong but time is getting tight this cycle. Competition is intense. Beating out UNLV is no small accomplishment.

I think that for the most part any high school data on an offensive lineman is completely irrelevant. For one the same 20 year old guy is probably 30 or more pounds heavier now and should be considerably stronger as well.
Also that dominant high school offensive lineman typically faced 220 lb defensive linemen and rarely had to block another legitimate college defensive lineman. The P4 schools can offer to just about every 6’5” 290 lb high school senior even if that kid might sit
the bench for two years while in the S&C program. Probably why so many college offensive linemen hit the portal. Most have no desire to wait their turn at Alabama for a two year staring position.

The Rebs have been working hard behind the scenes, building vision, groundwork and commitment to become a legit G5 power. When P4 realignment happens, they’ll be a prime target to make like the Jeffersons.

They certainly are. There are a few others doing that as well. I never understood why UNLV was so bad at football because I looked at them as a school that is in a market where there is no excuse not to be good.

Every portal situation is different. Both from a player and program point of view. Some guys in the portal are looking for money, but most are looking for a different or better opportunity. Programs are looking for either a starter, or some depth. Guys like Wiles transferred in knowing that they were going to sit behind Joey last year with an opportunity his last year. In the situation with Kohl, he was in an unfortunate situation where the guy immediately in front of him, (sophomore Becht) was forced into the starting role and he performed very well. This meant that Kohl was going to be the backup for at least two more years at best. I’ve heard great things about him, but until he sees the field, it’s just hype.

Question - I have noticed only a few lineman from the TP and only maybe 1 in the recruiting class. Is that ai sign that the new coaching staff believes we have the lineman we need? Or, are we just not able to secure any starters of depth.

Difficult to say with the coaching change in terms of philosophy but I will offer up a thought on the high school kids. Last year’s class has 4 RS Freshmen and you have 1 RS Sophomore in Sweatt ahead of any recruit. Now while it’s unrealistic for a high school kid playing in the trenches to be game ready his first year, that’s still a lot of traffic to navigate. The possibility that you won’t start until your senior year is unappealing to some.

i was thinking the same thing but I have heard we have some good ones in that group. I also wonder if we went after some and just missed out on them. We either missed out on them or Loggains likes that group and is going to look at HS recruiting or the second portal window to add players if needed after spring. I have heard that Loggains has explained a detailed plan and is executing it.

UNC has always been one but you see the commitment they are making towards football. UNLV is in an area where they should be a good football school as well. I always felt they could do both.
