This conversation about coaches is why I made special arrangements to make it to our last Conference championship game in Louisiana. Just because you have made a lot of championship games in the last decade does not guarantee you don't go decades without going to another championship game. We had a good thing going but it can get gone even if you are working doing your best to have a great program. I don't know the answers but I do know when you get a chance to enjoy something....you should not take for granted that it (championship game) will happen again next year or even the next decade.

I agree with DOTE but in reality it is a crapshoot.

Think of coaches and players alike.

Player A ; a RS junior with very limited action at a major p4 contender. Has size, has frame, tape from HS checks out, but really only has practice tape from college.

He comes to App State, board is excited.

Outcome 1: Dude just wasn't good enough at old school to play but plays at App very well. Board praises staff for picking him up because they obviously saw something in him!

Outcome 2: He never plays or just isn't that great. Board then turns around and blames staff for taking a player that obviously couldn't cut it

We're doing the same thing with coaches...

Fuller - 10 years+ experience in the league. Never a DC, just a position coach.

Outcome 1: Just couldn't get his shot in the league but does well in college.

Outcome 2: You find out why he can't get a bigger job than an FCS school or 2 G5 schools very quickly.

Obviously everyone is rooting for App to win every game, never miss on a recruit or a coach. But that's not reality. So when people claim every move their team makes is so obviously the best thing ever, someone has to point out the potential negatives. Ying & Yang.

People who take it personally are the ones with the issues. Ying & Yang is everywhere. If you need a board where you only get the Ying or only get the Yang, make one.
Lets look at your Fuller scenario... If you took the time to read these forums and do your due diligence, you would see that Fuller was successful in the NFL and had a bright future but made some stupid mistakes when he was with the Panthers (and had to leave the NFL). There are numerous articles out there (even some I posted) that talked about how he was trying to rebuild his name and image. Sometimes people do stupid things and suffer the consequences. Sometimes they pick themselves up and try to right the ship. I think this is the case for Fuller. You posted two possible outcomes for each scenario, and you are right. It can be successful or it can go t1ts up.... The same is true with our past coaches. They could have been successful or they could fail..... You are saying that because there is a scenario where something fails we should just hold back any thoughts of optimism and just say to heck with it...
Touché. I hadn't read those post. I'll admit that part. It does change my opinion on the hire but I will say that my point is still a hill I'm willing to die on if necessary.

If people are allowed to be overly positive, and express reasoning as to why, then people can cut down that reasoning with their own opinion. This always comes off as negative, but usually it's just a more realistic outlook from the eye of the beholder.

Basically, we're all App fans. Just because someone constantly plays devils advocate or is always cutting down others positive outlook doesn't mean they don't think positively or are even a negative person. That's just their outlook on one particular thing.

I like DJ, spent time with him in the past wish him big success.

My comments were truth about DJ and how it is similar to the Ponce hire. Both dropped back down to App to have more of a voice in play calling. Time will tell..

Fuller on the other hand, well that's on you guys to drink that kool aid.

How about you let time tell rather than write him off.

That’s the point.

Who did I write off??

Boise St will be a tough game next year -- BUT we all expect us to win that game!! Go Apps.
Can't wait to see the line on the CLT game, that will tell us a lot.

Also I thought a majority wanted to go AWAY from the Jerry Moore - App State coaching tree, but everyone has done a 360* on DJ coming back.... wish you guys would decide one way or the other.

(I have zero against DJ, like him, wish him well, I am just calling out the hypocriticalness of this board)

We just need something to talk about on this board. Jerry Moore took us to the promised land and we liked it. We want more. Just like that beautiful person that was once in our life but is not now in our life. We want them back in our life.

That's not allowed! You can only think one way and one way only on here!

How dare you have differing thoughts! Only those that agree with the masses are allowed here or you'll get gaslit to the extreme!

With all due respect to Gillin, not sure I care that much about what he thinks about the number of transfers…. Jerry Jones. What’s his coaching record?? Just need to continue to raise more NIL and $$$$.
Agreed.

Ponce is 53. DJ is 35. Two different scenarios, and I’d agree with you on Ponce. Not sure why you’re so hung up on Fuller. He’s a DB coach not a DC.

He offers differing thoughts, sometimes even in the same post!

Wonder if Dowell will essentially be the OC cause we have most of an offensive staff and no named OC.

I have heard rumor that he is going to call plays this year but I was told that is the plan and hasn't been set in stone. It certainly appears that is what he will do like you said.

He was OC for the Liberty team that beat us at home in our transition year. WR coach under Wilks and coached DJ Moore. Will he be WR coach or QB coach?

Yes, looks like he became OC afterwards.
