Next Years Roster

Unread post by Yosefus » Tue Dec 10, 2019 4:02 pm

So one more game and it is off to next year. Not a lot of seniors on the 2019 squad but some key pieces O line and linebackers and d backs graduating.

What do the replacements look like?

Will we be even better next year? Or take a step back?

I think you have already seen a lot of the guys on defense that will take over as big time playmakers. The safety position will be young and inexperienced but the rest of the secondary should be back. I think the biggest ? will be at offensive line, especially LT. Will be interesting to see who steps up for that position in spring ball.

OL probably is my biggest worry for next year.

There was a huge drop off when VJ was out at LT. Charlotte had multiple sacks when he was out. He hobbled back in the second half and finished like a warrior. I hope we have a better plan in development.

I shudder to even think this (much less write it), but would it be possible for ZT to graduate early and transfer to (let's say) Mizzou and play next year as a grad transfer? Just not up on all the grad transfer rules.

A buddy of mine who is a huge NC Sate fan told me early in the year he wanted their coach fired, Drink hired and ZT to transfer in an play next year as a grad transfer.

Didn't Kelly Bryant transfer last year to Missouri to take the QB spot, it would be quite that battle

Victor Johnson, Gaither, Fehr, and Thomas are the biggest losses in terms of talent. Those guys along with Cook and Franklin were huge in the locker room. Our senior class was outstanding.

As for the roster in 2020 it is stacked. The replacements for most are bigger and faster. Gaither and Johnson are the only two seniors we lose that I think may be down spots at first. We have two great senior safeties and they will be replaced by two more great ones. Nick Hampton is a great talent who should be primed for a huge 2020 season.

I worry about the loss of Evans because I think he is gone. Signs early on were that he is declaring early. Evans could go anywhere from early 4th to late 6th round depending on who all comes out this year. Evans is a top 100 caliber player though. If he stays we should be able to go undefeated or 11-1 in the regular season .

I'll say the same thing I said about Drink last year. Whether Clark or whoever it is they inherit a team that should be top 20 in the country. There is no excuse to lose 3-4 games next year unless there are injuries. The real question is 2021 because the 2020 senior class is huge and we will be very young in 2021. It would not shock me if we won 13 games next year but only won 7-8 in 2021. There will be a bit of a rebuild unless the guys Drink went after show up and turn out to be studs early on. 2021 will take a great coaching job not just on the field but to get studs who can step in and play.

Jordan Fehr will leave a huge hole as well.

I'm not worried about it. I'm sure NC State would love to have Thomas but I don't think there is any chance he leaves App to go with Drink to Missouri. Just from what I hear about Thomas he loves App and believes we are a top 20 team that can accomplish so much. He would would go from an experienced senior and leader on the 2020 team here to a new guy who would have to start over out there. I would also expect Drink to either get a big time recruit or transfer from a P5 to be QB.

I will miss Jordan but I think we will miss him for sure. He is tough to replace but Nick Hampton is a freak that should quickly become one of the best in the SBC. Nobody could block him this year. Losing Fehr and Gaither both combined is the real tough part. I wish just one was leaving but Hampton, Jackson, Cobb, and Doublin are very good. Those guys will help form what should be the best LB unit in the SBC within a few weeks. Once they get comfortable in starting roles they have a ton of talent and have some experience because they all played a lot.

Really more of my friend trying to get me to worry, but I guess with grad transfer rules things like this are now a possibility.

I have been very complimentary towards Drink on this board since the announcement, but if he ever tried to pull something like that then I would be outraged.

I don't think he will but if he did I am pretty sure ZT would not go with him. I would love to hear feedback from AppSt94 and Moose on that but I believe they would confirm that but I am pretty certain on that.

I would expect to see Clayton Howell transfer. There is no reason that he should not be punting somewhere in 2020.

Why in the world would a starting QB, his senior year, leave a top 25 team to fight for a job somewhere else? Some of you people need to get off the crack pipe just like the people who said DBG would start over him this year.

Thomas sure as hell ain't following Drink and no way he goes to NC State of all places, they are going to be bad next year too and firing their coach. App already beat an ACC team that obliterated NC State.

Jackson is a MONSTER! I truly believe with him getting the lion share of the reps next year the whole country will know his name. Also saw Jolly was the second highest rated corner in coverage by PFF(LSU Stingly is the only one rated higher). The pieces are in place for a special season.

On a side note; how about Cam Peoples being our guys number one cheerleader after his injury. A lot of times a key guy suffers that type of injury and you rarely see them until they are healthy. I can think of moments throughout the season where he was hyping someone up! And the picture from Saturday of him waving the TIGMA flag is just Awesome to see!

ZT loves App. No way he leaves. Satt kept his scholly alive following serious high school injuries. All the other schools pulled their offers.

In addition, he never adapted fully to the Drink system. Everyone watched the struggle throughout the year.
I think there was respect because that's who ZT is, but I think no sorrow on his part at the events that transpired.
Prediction......No way in hell he suits up in the Tiger version of black and gold!!

My question was about grad transfer rules and a hypothetical situation a buddy of mine posed to me after he was coming to the realization NC State was on it's way to a god awful season. I just don't know how all of the transfer rules work and if something like that is even a possibility.

But to your broader point, who knows why these young athletes make the decisions they do. Sometimes "people" (family, coaches) get in their ear and get them thinking. Ryan Finley was a relative unknown when he transferred to NC State and he is now playing in the NFL...Drink got a lot of credit for that and is one of the reasons why he was considered a top coach on the move and a guru on offense.
