I'm not concerned that we didn't retain Ivey. I liked Ivey, but he hasn't done anything that would tell me he would be better than Roof. Ivey needed experience, that's a big thing he lacked and why he ultimately wasn't retained (IMO, but why guarantee an inexperienced guy for more than one year if you don't have enough to know how he will fit in your system). Eli is looking to take this program up a notch and every hire he has made to date has indicated that. I absolutely have my reservations about Roof, but I also can't look at his resume and find things to say he absolutely can't coach defense. Now, if he was hired as a head coach, I'd be worse than Asu7 in my criticism. But as a former Auburn follower, I've seen good things. We can't get caught up in his Duke resume and his GaT resume because those schools really have limitations that could have limited him. And as I stated above, I can only laugh at NCSU fans blaming their defensive woes on a 1yr safeties coach. That is just plain dumb. If Drink believes Roof can get it done, I've got to trust him based on how much I believe in Drink right now. If the players believe in Drink, which I personally know a lot of them do, then they need to quit being shallow minded and believe that Coach Drink knows more about football and what it will take to win than they do, we do, and maybe even our former staff does.

Relax for now, but be ready to buckle up for what will be a VERY interesting 2019 season.

Eliah Drinkwitz- Head Coach

1. Shawn Clark- Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line

2. Ken Dorsey- QB coach

3. Greg Gasparato- Safeties

4. Erik Link- Special Teams Coordinator

5. D.J. Smith- Outside Linebackers

6. Justin Watts- TE

7. Junior Adams- WR Coach

8. Ted Roof- DC/insider linebackers

9. RB coach ??

10. Cornerback coach ??

Does this seem right?
We need a DL coach.
So we’d either let roof coach safeties and DJ coach all the line backers, or let Gas coach all the DBs. I’d prefer the latter.

Also possible we let Dorsey coach RBs and Drink is the QB coach.
I'd rather have Roof coaching the DL. Want him nowhere near coaching anything in the secondary.

I won’t be here to say I told you so as I will be upset because our D is not what it could have been. What frustrates me with Roof hire is that we hire a guy who will change our scheme and we that scheme change does not suit the personnel we have. I see is going to more of a 4-2-5 base. I get we run multiple fronts but at the same time our base is a 3-4. I don’t see us staying that way. There were people available that are experienced in the 3-4 that we could have hired. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. I just don’t see us staying in the 3-4 which suits us. Therefore we struggle on D. Our D was great last year so this is on them if they screw it up barring injury. Like I have been saying I hope I am wrong.
You’ve stated your position dozens of times. Over and over! Our defensive players are already nervous about what lies ahead and you’ve certainly done your part to fuel that. I know I speak for many on this board: Give it a rest.
I agree. Enough. At least let's wait until the team gets out on the field for spring practice and fall camp and see what he actually will do before we wring our hands and fret. I propose a dead period for bitching until then. If we come out in a different scheme in the fall and its not successful, then have at it. I may join you because I don't believe in screwing with something that's working either. Until then, let's give the pros whose livelihood are on the line the benefit of the doubt.

We have lost two of the top corners in the league as well as MQ. The defense personnel is changing just as the Oline did last year. The defense will be different and would be different no matter who the D coaches were to be.

When Woody left many many lamented that the D was doomed. When we couldn't get our first couple of DC choices and had to settle with BB the same doomsday talk. Some want Woody back but GT is pleased to be getting rid of him; fan base talk is just talk. People rant or say something absurd just to get attention and a debate going.

This is looking like an awesome staff. In 9 months we may be all thinking that we traded up just as we came to learn regarding BB.

For any players reading these threads, most of us are idiots, myself not excluded. Message boards are fun, but there are few if any experts. If there are a number of people unhappy about something, it is probably a good thing.

Bone in. Having to work the chicken wing is what makes you feel better about shoving your fat face and washing them down with a tall glass of beer. You stack up your bones and make gestures for people to see how hard you worked to eat those.

As much as I am not excited about roof’s hire, I really don’t think he is going to completely change our defense the way some of us are saying.
Doug Gillin has said since day 1 he wanted someone who would keep our defense in the same scheme.
Drink has said the same. He isn’t dumb, and knows the success and the players we have on defense. He wouldn’t have hired him if he didn’t think he could run a 3-4 defense.
Roof isn’t dumb. He isn’t coming in to switch us to a 4-3 defense knowing we don’t have the personnel for it.
The question is: does Roof have the skills and knowledge to maintain, if not enhance our 3-4 defense going forward?
This is the part I’m unsure of, but again, I’m willing to trust Drink to make the right hire, whether it is roof, or the next man up.

For the record, I wasn't referring to this message board's negativity. As far as I know, he doesn't even read it. I sure don't tell him either, good or bad. I let him base his opinions on his own experiences. He is not going in with a preconceived idea but is ready to go to work and prepare for next season no matter who the coaches are. Go App!

Blah Blah Blah. Coach said we are not changing the scheme in any significant fashion. Your hysterical arguments to the contrary seems a bit delusional.

I hate this hire not because I have anything against Roof, but because of the endless "told you so" posts that we will have to endure during his tenure anytime the D makes a mistake.
We give up the first score of the season , perhaps a field goal , say in game three.....

As a parent of a defensive lineman, who is hearing negativity on social media, all I can do is speak positivity into the situation. Am I concerned? Yes, but we should also give Roof a chance. Yes, change is hard and we wish Ivey would have been retained, but he wasn't. I'm remaining positive because these players have a great work ethic and truly do give their all to App State.
Wow great perspective.

I hope the players know the fans are behind them 100%, which probably leads a few of us to act like divas when administration does something we might not agree with totally (myself included)

But its important to remember that Roof is by all accounts a players' coach and has worlds of experience that all players can benefit from.

Best is yet to come! GO APP!
