Psychology
Any thoughts on the Psychology Dept at App? I took two classes 20+ years ago. I have heard good things but have someone interested in this major and figured I might as well ask here.
Being an away game I figured the board would get some looks today.

I had not heard anything negative but was hoping someone may have some personal experience. Maybe I'll get a reply tomorrow.

Re: Psychology
Unless you plan on being a psychologist or going to grad school for some form of Psych then my advice would be to NOT major in psych. App has great teachers in the department but the degree itself is pretty useless. Luckily, the whole "it's not what you know it's who you know" worked out in my favor. Maybe as a minor or second major as I believe psych prepares you for working with people as well as management roles but I wouldn't spend the $60k on a psych degree.

Re: Psychology
The girl who works PT at the local Gold's gym where I work out graduated with a degree in Psych and has been hired as a Social Worker. It's a relatively low paying job with mounds of stress (CPS), but she will get state benefits.Yosef10 wrote:Unless you plan on being a psychologist or going to grad school for some form of Psych then my advice would be to NOT major in psych. Re: Psychology
I am aware of the job market for Psych majors. This person is aware as well and has the ability to get advanced degrees. She knows she will need them. She did an intern this summer with someone that works with teenagers, and enjoyed the work.
This person is actually daughter #2a (the older twin). Don't know why I was not mentioning that before, but I did want an answer that was not tied to me. I am happy she is expressing interest in App (obviously). Her older sister will be a senior at App when she is a freshman in college. She has done some research on psych depts in state and out of state and is leaning towards WFU or App. But even with my desire to have more children at App I also want her to go where she has the background to move on to advanced degrees as I know she will need that.
Thanks for all the feedback.

Re: Psychology
I had several friends who got psych degrees and all of them were able to find jobs they enjoyed or get into graduate programs they wanted. And I'm class of '12 so it's not like they suffered in the wilderness for years before stumbling into something they liked.

Re: Psychology
Sorry I didn't mean to come across as its Armageddon if you did a psych degree; I believe the material provides you with tons of skills to succeed in a wide array of professions. I meant more in terms of ROI just for a undergrad degree. But like I said there are great teachers in that department. Tim Ludwig, Mary Ballard, Tim heulsman, Doug waring to name a few. As far as advanced degrees I've heard great things about the Industrial - organizational psych program and i think a masters of psych. I think app has some kind of social work masters as well if she wanted to work with teenagers?

No need to apologize. I wanted an honest answer, and I had some preconceived thoughts myself. You gave me what I asked for.Yosef10 wrote:Sorry I didn't mean to come across as its Armageddon if you did a psych degree; I believe the material provides you with tons of skills to succeed in a wide array of professions. Re: Psychology
The job market is very good for school psychologist right now and App has the best school psych program in the state. If you really want to be in demand get school psych and applied behavior analyst degree. Some states cover these services for children with autism and the consultant market is big. In NC these people are in high demand in the schools and they are not on the same pay scale as teachers. Still under paid but...
Will add as well that many corporations are hiring behavior analysts (most of whome have psych undergrad) to run their safety programs. These people are paid very well. So I think if you get an advanced degree and know the market you can do well with a psych degree.

When you add a Master's in Clinical Psychology, the income is probably more than 90% of the members of this board.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote:I am aware of the job market for Psych majors.
