Read about this evil attack over the weekend; learned overnight that it strikes close to home. According to WFMY-TV 2 in Greensboro, the young mother-to-be who lost her unborn child in this attack and is fighting for her own life--is an Appalachian grad. Truly, truly abominable...

I live down here in Southern Pines. I've read about the story but this is the first peep I've heard about the local connection. Awful story

The killer of this baby won't be charged with murder.

“Under Colorado law, essentially there is no way murder charges can be brought if it’s not established that the fetus lived as a child outside the body of the mother for some period of time.”

However, what if both parents had planed for the child to be born and live outside of the mother's body as a child, then teenager, then adult, etc. before dying of old age, would that not be murder?

I hope it is not considered out-of-line for me to share a e-mail sent to a list I'm on but, considering the topic and the nature of the board, I am hoping people will appreciate information and an update. The e-mail is dated March 26.
Dear SD Community,

Michelle Wilkins, the young mother-to-be in Longmont, Colorado, who lost her
unborn child in an attack by a deranged woman, was a graduate of the Sustainable
Development department. She was active in SDSA and had returned to campus last
year to pursue courses in art.

Michelle was released from the hospital on Tuesday. A public statement released
today by her family, included this information, "She is now out of the hospital
in a safe location and accompanied by her partner Dan, is taking the first
tentative steps along a long journey towards recovery and spiritual
reconciliation. She is surrounded by friends and family and wishes to express
her deep gratitude for all the expressions of love, kindness, and spiritual
solidarity she has received from both the Longmont community and from around the
world. Michelle believes her recovery is directly aided by the prayers and
positive energy she is receiving."

A GoFundMe site has been set up in her behalf. The family reports that "Michelle
is facing a long recovery -- physically, emotionally, and financially. She would
greatly love and appreciate anything anyone could offer in the way of support."

I know you all join the department in sending Michelle our sympathy and our hope
that
she will heal in all ways, in time regaining her spirited, vibrant way of being
in the world.

It makes one suspicious of the circumstances involved in the drowning of the one year old.

Hard to believe this lady won't be charged with murder. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the courts, but also sad to think what these parents must be going through after all of this.
