RIP: Former Mountaineer Chuck Derrick

I just learned that former Mountaineer Chuck Derrick passed away last Friday. It's erie that he died on the day of the spring game--an event that he wouldn't have missed except under some unfortunate circumstance. RIP Chuck.

Charles L. Derrick MATTHEWS - Charles L. "Chuck" Derrick, 74, of 5202 Shannamara Dr., Matthews, NC 28104 and 919 Mayfield Road, Ruffin, NC 27326 died on April 4, 2014, after a brief illness. He was born on July 30, 1939, to the late Edna and Walter Derrick of Paw Creek. He is survived by his wife Judith Derrick and step-grandchildren Megan and Dallas Rhyne, of the home; sister Mary Henry and husband Jerry, of Shelby, and their children Dave Henry, Joe Henry, Kathy Twomey, and Andy Henry; brothers, Edwin Derrick of Salley, S.C., David Derrick and his wife Barbara, of Charlotte, and their children Chad Derrick and Ryan Derrick, and Richard Derrick of Spartanburg, S.C., and his son Reed Derrick; and 10 grand-nieces and -nephews. Survivors also include "brothers of his heart" Don Tickle, of Southern Pines, Bob Tickle (deceased), Richard Tickle of Boone, Louis Dibrell of Danville, Va., Jerry Wyatt of Danville, Donnie Strader of Ruffin, and special friend Susan Dibrell of Danville. He was employed part-time by Wilkins Realty. He served four years in the U.S. Navy, was a graduate of Appalachian State University, and held a pilot's license for small aircraft. He was a member of the North Carolina and Virginia Board of Realtors, Thrift United Methodist Church, YOSEF Club, Men's A Club, Former Athletes Club, NRA, The Low Life Rod and Gun Club in Ruffin, and several other organizations. He loved to garden and ride 4-wheelers over the farm. He lived life to the fullest, numbered his friends in the hundreds and was the best friend a person could have. Services will be held for the Charlotte area on Monday, April 7, 2014, at 2 p.m.at Thrift United Methodist Church, 8245 Moore's Chapel Road, Charlotte, NC 28214, and for the Danville area on Wednesday, April 9, at 2 p.m., at Townes Memorial Chapel, 215 West Main Street, Danville, VA. Visitation will follow at the home of Mrs. Susan Dibrell, 130 Virginia Ave., Danville, VA. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice Development Dept., E. 1420 7th Street, Charlotte, NC, 28204, or Thrift United Methodist Church, PO Box 425, Paw Creek, NC 28130. Townes Funeral Home & Crematory is serving the Derrick family.
