Let’s hope enrollment grows in HKY. It would be a shame to start calling it “Everts’ Folly”

The effort to establish a Hickory Campus goes back to Chancellor Borkowski and a handful of Catawba County folks. Credit to Everts , she found a way. There was some good fortune involved along the way certainly but she got it done and by all accounts it is making a difference in the lives of those that take advantage of the opportunity.

They should do a basketball ball game every year in Hickory.
.
They let me walk around freely in the open part of the building, and I took a lot of pictures when I dropped by there a few weeks ago. When I was there is was pretty much empty of students and staff, though it was a Friday around lunch time.

I did look in a science lab, and it may have been labeled Chemistry lab. I did not see any gas outlets nor any lab benches with fume hoods but it is possible the room was not finished.

I am not sure how many classrooms are up and running. The cafe area which would have been in use when it was an office building was not ready for use but I am not sure it needed to be gutted to make it usable either. I did like all the social areas, which will be nice to have since dorms are not an option. I did notice a few clubs announced, though I can't remember the clubs purpose.

Props on showing the football game. That should be a regular feature, and maybe attract some alumni in the area.

Do these students pay the athletic fees that does allow admission into athletic events? I was going to ask a few questions in the admissions office but I needed to get to Boone myself to make the field hockey game that was the purpose of the trip.

For those of us who were at App in the early 90’s, bringing Borkowski up doesn’t make us feel any better about the vision or wisdom behind adding a Hickory campus.

I think like most things/people that end on a sour note, you often only remember the negative (look no further than football coaches as another example). Everts legacy will be tied to the Hickory campus and that is a decent legacy to leave. In a time where secondary education is declining, we were able to expand to an underserved area. That should be viewed in a positive manner and supported for future growth.
