Re: Hickory Campus
From what I have read the former office building is far from complete and that will happen as students enroll and the space is needed.
Look on Google Earth and you will see the area around it is built up. Land can be purchased and such but I don’t see dorms and such being built there for a long time, at best. There is a lot of parking and some of that could be used to build on.

Also, there is a cemetery behind at least part of it, so it is partially landlocked. Kind of like the backside of the Boone campus is landlocked by Tennessee.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote: ↑Sat Nov 09, 2024 7:17 amFrom what I have read the former office building is far from complete and that will happen as students enroll and the space is needed.

Don’t misunderstand me, though. This is a long-term investment and a smart move to shore up WNC as Appalachian State territory (much like ECU has in the area where the barbecue sucks). If we can one day get a medical school, it will probably be in housed in Hickory (interstate, airport, only an hour from Charlotte, etc.).

MEDICAL...WE NEED THE MEDICAL SCHOOL. APP OR UNCC is going to get it. It will determine the winner long term.

Re: Hickory Campus
I was going to mention the cemetery and it’s not small, and I knew someone would bring up the smallish cemetery near the RCOE building. And they are not the same scale.AppinVA wrote: ↑Sat Nov 09, 2024 7:56 amAlso, there is a cemetery behind at least part of it, so it is partially landlocked. Re: Hickory Campus
A medical school isn't going to change much for App. Also, UNCC won't be getting one either, Wake Forest is opening a 4 year school in Charlotte next year.

Re: Hickory Campus
Wake Forest is but only because of Atrium’s acquisition of them. That being said, you are correct that Charlotte shouldn’t need another.

I’ve always thought App could do well with a dental school. I believe Tennessee, UNC and East Carolina all have dental programs. There’s an opportunity there but we all know UNC blocks higher pursuits from universities in their system to monopolize the market.
