Flooding is the worst part. Yes Hugo was wind damage but this flooding is epic and catastrophic.

Has anyone seen or heard of a good charity that is primarily helping Boone and the surrounding area. Circumstances in my life right now want let me get up there to physically help but I sure want to do something. But I do want to target Boone.

I imagine Samaritans Purse is all over this situation, but I can't confirm. They are a great asset to have, especially in this region.

Was able to get out of cabin off Pine Run Road. Displaced House on side of road as driving out. Much work to be done. However, main roads in Boone proper are drive able.
Students walking around town.
Classes cancelled this coming week.
Going to take a while for secondary roads to get repaired.

Area around tusculum college in greenvile are almost completely cut off and many water pipes have burst, bridges collapsed, running out of clean water and isolated due to out bridges. Got word it's getting wild at dollar generals and gas stations.

Someone 102 years would have been a 1st year in 1940. That is possible, though given the size of the school then not likely, but not possible.wb247 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 10:08 pmAnyone have any idea about who/when our furthest back living graduate might be? Your comment made me curious.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 8:34 pmI would think so. I was in Bowie during Hugo. I remember the piles of dirt at the Mall but not anywhere flooding like this, though I also had enough sense to not be out and getting in the way to what would have been the worst parts of Boone. I remember Rankin being flooded, or at least the aftermath.rbarthle17 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 12:55 pmFor those around old enough to remember, is this worse than when Hugo hit?
This is up there with 1940 and losing the railroad into Boone, and 1916. Those may have had worse landslides due to mountains being much more bare of trees due to logging. That was a huge problem with the landslides in 1916 I have read. (I was not at App in 1916 for the record.)

Re: King Street Flooded
What is the situation on campus? The school has a responsibility for the welfare of the on campus students. Is there power and clean water and food available? I read classes are cancelled for a week but day to day life still has to be handled.

Not sure about the campus in general but there was a post that central dining had power, wifi and food and was feeding everyone (students and non students as well).rbarthle17 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2024 10:02 pmWhat is the situation on campus? Use this link if you have any questions
They have power and water in the dorms. I’m 100% sure the school has been working closely with local and state leaders to make the right decisions. It’s not like they are shooting from the hip

Re: King Street Flooded
The videos and pics are unbelievable. I’m not from western NC but I spent my college days at this great university, grew up camping in western NC, even named one of my sons Boone and still make frequent trips up because it’s my happy place… My thoughts and prayers are with all those who are directly impacted. Catastrophic/historical flooding. Makes me sad for many reasons. I know the towns will band together and build back and it’s gonna be a long road, but they will persevere!

Re: King Street Flooded
Being a current student I see all the emails and text alerts. It has been a lot. But hopefully they have had more detailed info for those in dorms as I’m sure they have questions. And the curfews (7-7 tonight) is going to drive some crazy.
Be interesting from an online class stand point. My professor is in Johnson City I believe. But we don’t meet at all anyway.

Re: King Street Flooded
I cannot comprehend how they will manage getting things running again in any semblance of "normal". After you make sure everyone at the university is safe and fed, Where to even start from there? Getting classes back up and running is the next high level task, but how do you do that when you have so many faculty and students who are not on campus and may be unable to get their situations in a place where they can turn their focus to the classroom.
There is a whole level of big picture thinking that is beyond my skill set here.

Re: King Street Flooded
Last email from chancellor mentioned some classroom buildings received damage. I assume water damage. So that’s another thing adding to the issues of getting classes going again.

Re: King Street Flooded
I just returned from trip where I was ferrying friends out of the Asheville area and delivering water/ food/ gas to their neighbors in my truck. 26 is open to 74 and east of there. I don’t think you can get to the whee and I only had to get past fletcher into buncombe county. Past ashville appears to be a complete shitshow. Cell service is non existent in places and spotty at best in others. I had to navigate with a paper map. The city water system is out in Asheville and no water is flowing to the water towers from my understanding. Taps stoped working midday and stores are overrun if not empty. Trees everywhere and Power lines draped across the roads. Most people I talked to had little access to info and were unaware of what was going on around the region. Cellphone service just started working somewhat in areas. Gas was almost non existent from kings mountain to all the way up 26.
I know it wasn’t the brightest idea but I got 2 friends out and delivered supplies without a problem. Y’all i grew up on the coast a remember going outside to see the eye during Fran. The damage to the infrastructure is unprecedented and I’ve never witnessed something like that.

Re: King Street Flooded
it’s not over, both the GFS and Euro long range models have another hurricane impacting NC next Monday. The GFS has it taking the same track over Asheville/ Boone the euro has it going over Florida and impacting the coast. Long range models need to be taken with a grain of salt (Wx could explain I assume) but Either way, in season we are always 10 days away from a major hurricane and it looks like it has a high likelihood of happening againBTK2000 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2024 11:31 pmI just returned from trip where I was ferrying friends out of the Asheville area and delivering water/ food/ gas to their neighbors in my truck. 26 is open to 74 and east of there.
