"If we are putting a team on the field regularly that we don't expect to compete for titles then we are doing those kids and the school a terrible disservice."
I totally disagree with you on this - how are doing a disservice to kids and the school - you are giving a large number of young men and women a chance to play a sport in college and APP State University enrolls young men and women who will get a great education. Young people aren't stupid, they will know if whether a program has a legitimate chance to win a championship in their four years - they make the decision to pursue the opportunity or not. You think the young men who sign to play football at Vanderbilt think they will win a championship? 1-2 conference games, possibly? You think those kids who sign to play football or baseball at WVU expect to win the Big 12 against the likes of the Texas teams, the Oklahoma teams, what about Kansas or Kansas State in baseball??? - they still field a team.

I don't know what they think. I don't talk to them. If I were playing there, that would be my expectation and I would expect my school to expect that as well. I think it is a disservice to anyone to put them out there for a participation trophy.WVAPPeer wrote: ↑Tue Mar 07, 2023 12:31 pm"If we are putting a team on the field regularly that we don't expect to compete for titles then we are doing those kids and the school a terrible disservice."

You're telling me it's okay to put teams on the field that don't expect to compete. What is that, if not a participation trophy?

Re: Two year drought...
I didn't say couldn't compete, you said "compete for titles" - I said not any real hope to win championships should not call for disbanding a program ---

Watched Furman win the So-Con last night for the first time since 1980. Now that's a drought.

Re: Two year drought...
The dirty 'nooga mounted a pretty good comeback but fell short at the end. I'd like to have seen Chattanooga play the spoiler. Other thing that was noticeable is the caliber of play wasn't up to the level of the Sunbelt. At least in my opinion.

I was there in Roanoke where we had won it the year before ,86-83 over them .One of the best games I remember us playing. They were very good , we were a little better.I think they beat Marshall in 80.

You are correct.

Loved it when the tournament was in Roanoke as only live 20 miles away. Some great games with VMI and Marshall, and of course, the nail biter win over Furman.

Re: Two year drought...
It's all about perspective these days. Not too long ago it was a big deal to actually compete for and win a SOCON championship in any sport and to win whatever cup they gave out for the overall winner. Winning and receiving a ring was a big deal. When we won several conference championships in a row it was a big deal. Now it's NY6 (or get in a playoff) or bust. I'm sure that any athlete we have any any sport gets on a field or court and competes to win. Not every one of them gets a fat NIL check or is just biding his short time in college until the pros come calling. Just because we don't win every title doesn't mean our athletes aren't competing to win.

Re: Two year drought...
If guess only about 10% win a title. Less than 1% win a national title. But I’d hope 100% are competing. Some not talented, but competing with all they have.

Re: Two year drought...
Good times .I think the next year we lost to UTC by a couple in the finals. We had Fitch and Payton , they had a guy named Morken .There was a controversial call at the end that didn't go our way.Bobby left for Georgia Tech not long afterward.I talked to him the day before the announcement .I wished him luck as I knew he was leaving.hapapp wrote: ↑Tue Mar 07, 2023 9:27 pmYou are correct.

Re: Two year drought...
I'm just going to put it out there, because it hit me today. If you take football out of the equation, our athletic programs are really on the same level as Campbell. (especially on the men's side). They are our main conference competition in wrestling, although we did beat them handily this year. They beat us in MBB, took two from us in baseball .......

I actually think they would be ahead of us as it seems they win the head to head competitions. Really pretty sad when you think about it like that.WASU 93 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 11, 2023 9:39 pmI'm just going to put it out there, because it hit me today. Glory Days - Will add also men's tennis as trolling through thread this morning along with soccer where the baby was thrown out with the bath water. Men's tennis had a number of funded scholarships raised from private donors yet was dropped. Tennis along with soccer was never fully funded and yet competed at the highest level and both had multiple wins over Power 5 Schools. In the 70's tennis dominated the SoCon, team championships along with individual Championships were the norm. Even in last few years before being thrown to the curb tennis players in Belt were nationally ranked. THE BIG PICTURE FOR ME IS APPALACHIAN STATE IS RANKED HIGH FOR TEACHERS IN EDUCATION AND COACHING LEADERSHIP. Many players came to App for this reason and have gone on to coach college sports, even pro sports at the highest level, many Hall of Famers, and many have been state and nationally recognized. I HOPE BOTH SPORTS MAKE IT BACK. The 105 project will help. Fortunately tennis always had the backing of many indoor facilities in the area. Many universities utilize the towns facilities with great success also. I will continue to back all App State Teams regardless of level or conference. GO APP.

Campbell was a bad call away from beating UNCA and making the Dance.I think a couple of teams we played , KSU , UCSB made it .The UNCA coach has really done a good job.My opinion .
