USA Today has updated its on-going series on athletic subsidies among NCAA schools. The data suggest that Appalachian State's leadership deserves praise for keeping student subsidies to a moderate level of about 55 percent. Alarm bells should be going off at schools of interest to App, notably UNC-Charlotte, Texas-Arlington, Georgia State, Kennesaw State, UNC-Greensboro, Coastal Carolina, East Tennessee State, James Madison, College of Charleston, Western Carolina, Chattanooga, Old Dominion, UNC-Asheville, Texas State,Troy, The Citadel, Georgia Southern, South Carolina State, Arkansas-Little Rock and UNC-Wilmington, where student subsidies exceed 66 percent of total revenue. Our friends in Charlotte should be especially appalled at their level of 89 percent, third worst in the country.

Appalachian State's fanbase should be saluted as well.

We took a hit from football expenses but had no football revenues to offset them. The number will level off next year. If you are going are going to rag on us about location, at least spell the city correctly.

App does a better job than most, but we can do better. I don't want to compare ourselves to some of those programs.
We should compare ourselves to ECU and the Pirate Club they have over 6,000 members and raise over $4.5M each year. The Yosef Club has 3,000 members and gave $2.8M last year. Let's celebrate that, but always strive to do better.
As TO would say 1 + 1 = 6,000.

His first post was:
"Our friends in Harrisonburg should be especially appalled at their level of 89 percent, third worst in the country."
He has changed it since.

Could he be upset that it wasn't referred to as UNC Concord or UNC Harrisburg>

Don't compare us to ECU, we do better. APP does better per fan member $933 ($2.8/3000) vs $750 ($4.5/6000). That's even better when you consider ECU has 21 doctoral programs including Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Dental Medicine.
I don't know that we can expect to match their overall numbers since they have about twice the students to draw on.

Less than 3% of alumni give to the Yosef Club. More than 5% of their alums give to the Pirate Club. We need to grow the smaller donations.

Those numbers don't seem right to me, but I only think Yosef has only been pushing in recent years. ECU has been the fast growing school in the UNC system for years.

Do those numbers factor in the student Yosef/Pirate club members?

From the article:
"Just 23 of 228 athletics departments at NCAA Division I public schools generated enough money on their own to cover their expenses in 2012."
Are there figures available on the revenue/cost for just football and/or basketball programs, as opposed to the numbers for entire athletic departments? Just curious.

And that is an improvement over 10 years ago.
