App Professor just wants to be paid as much as a Dominos driver

LOL

"Inflation hit 7% in December, but this month Appalachian State University provided faculty a state-mandated annual pay raise of 2.5%. That amounts to a 4.5% pay cut in real wages. Faculty are expected to get a another modest salary bump in merit pay — the first substantive in a while. The maximum is 4.99%. Those few who will get it will make a .49% advance on inflation. But the rest will keep falling behind. If you leave ASU and head down U.S 321, you might notice a sign at the nearby Domino’s Pizza indicating that entry-level wages are $16-$23 per hour. I was told that includes tips. I asked how much training was required: One day. "

Or make some calls and get some NIL like endorsements. Professor walks into their psychology 101 wearing a Winkler Rental Property logo shirt. Announces that the class is being brought to you by Winkler properties. Halfway through the class...he/she reads a two minute promotional about why one should rent from Winkler....if they teach 3 to 5 classes...get a Monday endorsement from company A, Wednesday endorsement from another company B...let the endorsement money roll in

Four employees in the History department do make under $40k. Two are admin support and two are "senior lecturers".

What a BS, click bait, misleading title. People can do a little bit of research in five minutes...

Try being a staff employee at App and usually getting have the raise that teachers (Elem & Univ) have as often without as many optional raises available.
This is one of the few times that all of the employees get raises at the same rate at the same time.
I feel sorry for those that can't pick up another section of a class for extra pay and have to work all 12 months of the year.

I know a lot a App staff that take issue with this.
Also if he is a full or 3/4 timer, he is getting health and retirement, so . . .

How many Dominoes delivery drivers are averaging 40 hours a week and are also receiving benefits like health insurance? Probably zero. I don’t know if it’s the same everywhere but where I live it’s easy to see how fast food joints get around the higher hourly wage. You lock the doors and only use drive thru or if you open the doors you install a kiosk so that the customer basically does the job of the register person. Cut out X number of people, pay the others a higher wage, limit their hours and pay zero benefits. It’s basically the same pot of money just spread around to fewer people.

And I doubt this professor wants to be changed to hourly with no benefits.

Apply for research grants or publish. If you're only willing to do the minimum than you deserve the minimum.

And if you have tenure you literally can't be fired. What other professions have that level of job security? Few these days and certainly not the Dominoes guy. I am also not saying folks can't desire reasonable raises and benefits, etc. nor be able to voice their opinions about raises and salaries. But, life is all about trade-offs and you have to pick your path. I would think most college professors chose that job because of the total package knowing where they land in the overall compensation landscape of all professions (at least I assume they did since they usually claim to be our most intelligent demographic). I would question why anyone in the education field is even comparing themselves to a pizza delivery guy.

Seems to me that if Pizza Delivery driver jobs were so much more lucrative than App State U. Jobs, they wouldn’t have to have a “help wanted” sign for them.
Jus sayn....

Best way to get a raise is to change jobs. Don't ever feel like you don't have a choice!!!!!!!

That was 30 years ago. That party no longer exists.

Well with the exception of Governor Hunt and Governor Holshouser (Boone's own) The three did more for education in NC than all the rest combined.

This disdain for an Appalachian State University education is just absolutely dumbfounding to me. Absolutely ridiculous and pathetic comments.

This is coming from the Husband of a public school teacher of 36 years. Some of the professors at App and our other UNC universities don’t deserve to make as much as pizza delivery guy. My daughter had a few of said professors.

I should have read the entire article. He does reference the lack of funding by the legislature and how it has gotten worse. We gotta step up our quality of leaders.

I was probably a touch harsh in my original comment. There are a lot of great educators and as a whole they are probably underpaid. But we do have to consider that they get a ton of vacation time and the benefits are pretty good. Pensions are really on heard of in the private sector and tenure, well that doesn’t exist. If I could offer some advise to university professors it would go like this. Many of you have spent years teaching your students what to think and that’s not paying so well. Maybe try spending more time teaching them how to think. Who knows, maybe a thinking population will value education more than an indoctrinated population.
