Went to Beams a couple of times back in the 70’s. Great Chinese food there back then.
Beam’s was my Grandfather’s restaurant. I rolled many a wonton and egg roll in my youth!
I was just bragging on your Grandpa's place in the post above, it was the best.
Thank you, fjblair.

Beam's Restaurant was certainly a huge part of my childhood growing up in Avery County. I agree it was the best, very unique, and there won't be another place like it for sure. Everything was homemade from scratch and fresh, and my grandfather hand-cut the steaks every day.
During the summer and fall, most of the vegetables that were served came from the big garden that you passed by on the way in. Unfortunately my uncle-in-law, Richard, who was the Chinese chef passed away a couple of years ago. The restaurant operated for a total of 73 years from inception (the Chinese menu was added around 1970). I could probably write a pretty good book about the restaurant and it's history.
Thanks for that. I also grew up in Avery county and used to get so excited when going to the restaurant. Not only was the food outstanding, but the building and atmosphere just seemed so exotic to a kid.

Pour one out for the good old times. 21 gun salute and bagpipe taps. I met a wizard there who taught me valuable lessons like how to cut a coke can in half, insert some threaded PVC at just the right spot so when you screwed them back together you could hardly tell the anything was amiss. I say he was a wizards because he was in robes.

No college town ever stays the same, and the longer away folks get from graduation, the more they complain about it. Whenever you were at App, I'm sure it wasn't the same as it was 20 years earlier, and old grads then griped about it too. Don't get me wrong, it's sad to me too. But it's just inevitable. Most businesses don't last forever.

And the town needs housing.

That being said... it's a concerning trend in college towns that when local establishments close down, they are being replaced not by other local establishments but by chains. That's definitely not just a Boone thing. A lot of UNC folks sound exactly the same as us, just substitute Franklin St. for King St. It's sad.

As for Portofino, it wasn't around when I was in school. I feel bad for folks who had lots of good memories there. It's how I felt about Murphy's, Klondike, the $1.50 theater, the downtown Boone Drug, etc.

Katie's Pretzels was another for me. Relatively short-lived, but had the greatest soft pretzels and lemonade/limeade/orangeade I have ever had in my life.

Summer after my junior year I was in class and working in Belk Library, and I would grab lunch at either Boone Drug, Katie's, Blimpie (unlimited phone book coupons) or the hot dog place next to the theater just about every day. All gone now.

Caribbean Cafe, Rafters, and Cottonwood are my main things I miss from the mid to late 90s.

Went to Porto’s quite a bit during my time. Once on Halloween I saw a shark and a dinosaur have a conversation in the middle of Rivers Street. Conversation looked so serious, you would have thought they were discussing world peace.  Boone PD were not as entertained.

Especially when Murphy’s was on 105. I rented ski’s at Foxfire right beside of Murphy’s. We’d take turns at Murphy’s while waiting on the night rentals to come back.

OK people….you can squarely put the blame for Boone’s growth and all these buildings being raized on Jerry Moore and the football teams success. Were it not for them Boone would’ve stayed a 2 lane road coming into a 10,000 seat stadium. Man how I wish for the old days…

$1 Natural on draught. I never knew if I had a drinking problem, or a money problem.

You know your old when..a restaurant or bar is gone and it came after your time. Mother Fletchers, Antlers, PB Scott's. We used to hit that little spot near the Green Park Inn on Friday afternoon. It was on the right heading out of BR and was basically a convenience store/one room place. We could get pitchers and hot dogs. Was it Clyde's?

Clyde`s was right next to PB Scotts. They had $1 buckets of beer on Friday afternoons so we would go there before walking over to PB Scotts.

Boone has lost it's soul and the character that made it special, and is morphing into a corporate college town monoculture. It's gone and it ain't coming back.
