What kind of bird is used to dot the “i” in the Appalachian State University logo?

I could be completely off base, but I always thought it was supposed to be a dove. That logo so I don't think birds of prey would be the theme. I could be totally off base and I'm honestly not sure why I've always thought that.

Dr Byrd was Dean of College of Arts and Sciences. He came out of the Physics and Astronomy Department and was moved back to Physics and Astronomy. His demotion was part of the research/teaching aspects/emphasis of some departments if my memory is correct. There were a few bumper stickers at the time around some departments, and especially the physical and natural sciences about More Byrd brains and less bird brains" and they used the bird from the logo above. That all happened around 89-90 it seems and the logo had just changed it seemed.

If you really want to know more about the logo you might be able to find copies of The Appalachian from that time running a story on the new logo. At the time it seems most did not like the logo as the older logo have a mountain theme, whereas a bird..... not that much a part of Appalachian.

Those are really long tail feathers for a dove, but I think that is what it is suppose to be. I vaugly remember when that was rolled out in 1985 or 1986....

It is a yellow tail short beak mountain swallow. Indigenous only to mountainous areas. More specifically the Wataga region of western North Carolina. Mostly found on the logo of Appalachian State University where it has been hard to swallow for years.
