That's cool. I'll have my 3 App State children students go listen.
My oldest I made go listen to Maya Angelou when she spoke in Boone several years ago and he took a couple of buddies and they really enjoyed it and are glad that they attended.

His views are not for everyone, and he has had some comments in the past that I don't like but he is a highly recognized figure and college should be about being exposed to new ideas. And free admission.

Doesn't do much for me, he rode the coat of a real hero (MLK) to where he is today. Nowhere near as controversial as Al Sharpton but he has his skeletons in his closet and proverbial axe to keep grinding for $.

At the risk of leading this thread into "moderator deletion"...I like seeing colleges expose students to differing viewpoints. I believe its their charter/purpose/responsibility. I just wished they would bring in speakers from ALL sides. Several years ago I got to listen to Pat Buchannan and James Dean debate healthcare reform. It was excellent, and I learned something from both of them. Rarely is the opposing side wrong about everything, nor is one side right about everything. Lets hope we can listen and learn more in the coming days/weeks/months/years.

Though not impossible I doubt it would be easy to find speakers that want to deal with a debate format. One. they have to deal with sharing speaker fees and two, not everyone may be a great debater but can be a good speaker. But that is a nice idea and could be a model in some form.
Like JJ or not or see him as riding on other's coat-tails he is a national figure and has been so for many decades, and it is nice to see App attract that level of speaker.

I would add one correction. UNC-Charlotte is 100% wrong in every way shape and form as it relates to App State.

He is an historically relevant figure , ran for President a time or two , someone I would try to see if I was a student. He has made an excellent living playing the political system.

He's a lightning rod politically but he's got stories to tell I'm sure.
One of my most memorable times up at App was going to listen to Herman Boone of 'Remember The Titans' fame who was big in the civil rights movement and just hearing about these first-hand experiences with working with the likes of MLK was fascinating. Regardless of viewpoints it is good seeing our little school getting some high profile people to visit and speak.

Just took in his speech at Aretha Franklin's funeral. He's gone all low-key and melancholy in his presentation. The thunder and lightning rhetoric seems to be gone. Some of that's appropriate for the occasion, but the Jesse of the '80s and 90s is just not there.

Ralph Nader gave a good speech in the early 90s.
I thought Jello Biafra did a good job in the late 80s. Though not nationally known to many, he is known to a certain crowd.
We have had others as well but any high profile figure is nice to have on campus.

Spoke with him a few minutes at a Conference in the 80s as he was heading in to speak. I'm just not a fan. He has made a living from keeping a wedge between people.

I think the biggest we had was Muhammad Ali who came back in the 70s. I think App was the first school on his college tour.

Jane Fonda was there in the early 70s.
