Re: Gillin: We're not getting investment..we need from the local community
Any idea on how to even guess how much of those available dollars in the local community are going to the same thing, but somewhere else? How much money from within 30 minutes of campus is really going to another university? It's long been a point of pride at App, at least among I've met, to give 'till it hurts, then double it. That mentality is part of the culture around the program and university as a whole. "TIGMA" has always been much, much more than a sign that the players slap in the locker room. What if the local community is just tapped out?

But,by ricks comments it’s doesn’t matter. The concerts make memories with friends..BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Sat Sep 21, 2024 8:43 pmDoug is absolutely correct. The concerts at the end of the year are probably not making money for athletics program.
He is also correct. The Boone and surrounding High Country is benefiting significantly more than they are investing back into the university Be athletics.
This is not a getting the heat kind of deal commentary Although it may not be popular, it is truth telling. ...and more people should have these crucial conversations...

Does Boone or any place close have some huge business that generates huge revenue and is or could be a supporter? Lowes is in North Wilkesboro. I’ve heard it said that they are a supporter but to what extent?

When the Yosef Club employees turn over every 6 months, there is no one from Athletics to be an experienced familiar face to build relationships in the community.Tru2ASU wrote: ↑Sat Sep 21, 2024 8:54 pmMaybe they need to figure out a way to reach out to local buisnesses better. And tbh, as far as the locals, if they are not associated somehow with the university, a large margin hate the college with a passion, and what it has transformed Boone, and the local area into.
the Athletics side of campus competes with Foundation and School of Business and other departments for donations. They don't work together well.

I think 90 percent of Lowes headquarters is out of Mooresville now.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 22, 2024 8:33 amDoes Boone or any place close have some huge business that generates huge revenue and is or could be a supporter? And they’ve got the Tech Hub in South End Charlotte. Almost 2,000 employees in that high rise development.Tru2ASU wrote: ↑Sun Sep 22, 2024 9:26 amI think 90 percent of Lowes headquarters is out of Mooresville now.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 22, 2024 8:33 amDoes Boone or any place close have some huge business that generates huge revenue and is or could be a supporter? Food Lion or Ingles should be a target. Food Lion has a massive financial backing but not sure if we have any ties to them other than they originated in NC.

Skip to 1:46:00 for the pertinent information. Gillin's entire comments to the BOT Athletics Committee start around 1:42:15.

And in shorter video.
Gillin also blames the Schaffer Center for the Brad Paisley concern not being promoted enough. That's at 1:48:30 of the above YouTube video. Gillin says the concerns don't make money and for Athletics, it's so much work for so little return.
IMO, it's quite something for an Athletics Director to call out both the local community and another university entity in his comments. I've never seen Gillin do this before and it make me wonder about his future with the chancellor search and organizational change.

I have no idea what the local business community contributes in term of soft and hard dollar contributions. I’m not sure I would have been that direct in the criticism….

The town and the university haven’t gotten along for a while, but it does seem that the list of grievances has grown longer/deeper in the past 10 years.

Well, the community has a valid reason to not support App State Athletics right now.
I do hope the school takes up a leadership role and offers as much aid to the storm victims as possible. Opening the Holmes Center and Central Dining Hall is a start. Maybe this can heal some of the grievances between the locals and school?

I am not in Boone but as a small business owner I am tapped out on donations. I have someone asking for money every week.
Now with this change in events no other money will go to anything other than storm victims.

At the time, AD's comments are spot on. It is easy to play Monday morning QB after the hurricane.
The university is doing a lot. Holmes is open .. providing meals to all people. You can go to App St university main website and donate funds .
