Student Fees

According to this article, Coastal could be garnering three times as much in student fees for athletics as we do. The university disputes the figure but the figure they cite is still substantially more than most SBC schools.

That's with half the enrollment we have as well. I do think a small increase in our student fees is reasonable giving the huge increase in expenses due to inflation.
When will "It's better than what we had" no longer be good enough for App State?

I think athletics and academics should be completely separate entities and student fees shouldn't exist.

Ours was over 700 last I saw and if $700 is a non event for you then count yourself lucky. Add that up over the years a student is there and it's much more than a non event.

I am all for supporting athletics. But adding additional "taxes" to the students to enable other students to earn money is not necessarily a great idea. In the old model maybe, but with NIL, it doesn't align.
If the additions are to support specific facilities or amenities within those facilities that benefit the students, I could be swayed.

Look at it this way, those fees are what allows the students to attend all of the games in all the sports. Without those fees the students would not attend all that many games. From an individual ticket price to all the events students can get into, that is a bargain.

I'm not saying do away with them. I'm simple saying with the NIL, it doesn't necessarily align to raise them.

And, if you attend 6 Football games and 10 basketball games (which is probably more than average) that's $43.75 per game. A fair price, but not a bargain.

Throw in a few baseball games as well. You also have a few volley ball games and soccer games to attend as well not to mention wrestling matches too.

The average student never steps foot in any sports arena. This is an App athletics fan board so the bias is pretty heavy, but fees just "tax" the vast group that cares nothing for athletics. If the fees go to support the student union, library, or other campus amenities then that is fine as 90%+ of students will end up using those. Athletics should not be a part of that at any level.

This was a quick 60 second google so the sources are what they are. Further digging would show you that student attendance at athletic events has been on the decline since before the pandemic. Much of it is because they are getting priced out and others because they just don't care. Yet these students still have to pay the athletic tax.

The fact that athletics and academics are this intertwined is just an American sham as so many other countries keep it separate and thay doesn't seem to hurt their collegiate academic statistics and successes. Yet here we think sports are God and their success is the colleges success.....which is nuts.....

And that's the point. Athletics and academics should have never been this intertwined. We are charging students 2k+ over 4 years for something they don't use without giving anyone an opt out choice.

I think that athletics and academics are more intertwined than anyone would like to admit. When App wins the number of applications increase. There is a correlation. I doubt Appalachian would be where it is today without those signature wins. I doubt any university or college would be where it is today without athletics.

AppState is not A la carte. The University has derived great benefit from the association with athletics. Attendance , donations and academic standing have increased. A 2 grand assessment over 4 years is aninvestment in the symbiotic health of App.

I said average. The schedule you described applies to about 10% of the current student enrollment.

Again, don’t get rid of fees, but NIL makes it a different argument

There are a number of fees I had to pay that I opposed on political and religious grounds, but I paid them because 1. I had to, and 2. It promotes a healthy exchange of ideas. That’s a purpose of a university.
