Saw that Troy has already lost 18 of their 22 starters due to portal or graduation. Ouch.

JMU gets Washington QB. He will suit up for national championship game though.

The backup, Dylan Morris, not Penix (who IMO is the best QB in college football this season). Morris started before Penix and was OK. The UW fans really like him and blame their former coaches for squandering him. He's a pro style QB with a cannon arm.

Only has one year of eligibility left for JMU.

JMU is hitting the portal hard and need to. They lost 10 transfers to Indiana alone, and includes Sarratt, their top WR.

Pro teams have their "Big Boards" especially before the draft. I can now see college coaches doing the same except when you drop down in levels the type of player you want versus what you can actually get differs. We have typically been able to find that overlooked high school kid and have developed some into studs. In the past those guys stayed and played for 4-5 seasons. Now you hold your breath and hope they don't bolt. The new world includes finding up to 10 free agents who can contribute right away. Hitting on these guys is key. So far we seem to be doing ok with this new area of roster depth.

You also have to be careful to not “recruit over” a younger guy.

Exactly. The other aspect is that with high school recruits coaches often follow, watch and develop relationships with kids for maybe 2 years (or more). They know most of these guys inside and out. They also know the families as well. Now dudes hit the portal and all you really have is some limited game film. In reality many of the guys in the portal are there because they didn't get to play much so there is even less to see of them. If a guy has been on another roster for 2-4 years and has barely played are you relying on high school film? It's an absolute crapshoot.

100%. Guys are in the portal for reason. And those reasons often have red flags attached. The margin of error is much slimmer with transfers than high school kids because you are often trying to fill an immediate need.

Recruiting a big-named pocket QB is awesome...if you have the OL to protect him.

So JMU needs to land some bulls from the TP. And we can attest how difficult that can be for G5 programs.

I am curious where JMU QB may end up. He is still in portal. Wonder if he had expectations to go to IU with coach and that has not played out. Not sure why he would go to another G5 versus staying at JMU. Although jmu has had some portal kids, they will still be good next year IMO. He was a pretty good QB.

JMU picked up a 1000 yard rusher in the portal.

And George Petteway from UNC. I think UNC tried to move him to slot receiver..not sure what position he will play at JMU..I do not believe he played much at UNC during 2023. So not sure of expectations for him and his future.

Well he is at JMU now so their fans feel that he is a Heisman candidate.

Cig has taken 10 players with him to Indiana: WR, TE, 2 OGs, 2 RBs, 2 DL, and 2 LBs. They can replace the skill positions, but both trenches are taking a hit thus far, and lost a couple more to graduation.

Super QB friendly system there. He's going to put up huge numbers. Glad we don't play them in regular season.

We already beat him when he was surrounded by almost-undefeated Top 25 ranked talent.

The transfer QB had a good year at Tx St. last year. McCloud probably thought a P5 offer may be coming (which many of these kid have grand expectations)....and it probably did not happen..

I find that a bit weird, I wonder if he tried to return to JMU but was unable to because the position was filled so to speak. Texas St seems like a step in the wrong direction even with JMU losing their coach.

TxSt will be his 4th stop. He’s already been on 2 P5 teams, rather unsuccessfully. I don’t think a P5 offer was in his future.
