Terry Bowden to ULM

Unread post by NavyApp » Wed Dec 23, 2020 10:52 am

Well the Fun Belt just got a little more fun! Terry is always an interesting coach, hasn't translated to wins in his past couple of stops but he is interesting.

Has to one of the oldest grad students at Clemson.. 😁
Bowden, 64, spent the past two seasons at Clemson as a graduate assistant. The former Auburn coach also led programs at Akron, North Alabama, Samford (Ala.) and Salem (W.Va.).

When we beat him at Akron a few years back he looked like the Pillsbury Dough boy.

I remember when leaving the game at Akron and driving back towards Cleveland, where we were staying, listening to the Zips post-game radio show and thinking how complimentative Terry Bowden was of our guys in general, the gameplan we had that day, our program...everything App State really. It was impressive, and if you didn't know better you would have thought he was auditioning for the HC job at App. I'm looking forward to having him (and Butch) in the Belt - the more "names" the better, especially if we keep beating all of them ;)

What is Bowden thinking? There aren't any Division II jobs available for him to consider?

If he turns things around in Monroe, he'll deserve to be named "Coach of the 2000's" by a wide margin over Saban, Dabo and anyone else.

Probably not a bad move on ULM's part. They don't have a lot of money to spend on coaches (Viator was one of the lowest paid in FBS) and he still has a name that could translate to some success.

Outside of Alabama, those "super" assistants don't work out more than they do. At Alabama Saban is really making all the calls anyway. He just invites in some puppets from time to time. Rich Rod only being 57 was a bigger surprise to me.

They are definitely going for a win now approach.

And his son (QB, Arizona) transfers to ULM.

Eh, maybe. Their offense has never been the problem. They just can't stop anybody on defense. I don't see anything changing in that regard. There's a reason Rich Rod was no longer employed -- his offense doesn't work any more. Everyone runs it now, and everyone knows how to defend it.

You comment reminded me of the past and how much Rich Rod helped other programs (including our own), therefore I’m happy for him to have this opportunity. You gotta respect Rich Rod for his indirect contributions to our FCS Championship era. If not for his willingness to let our football staff learn his offense, we may not have enjoyed that fine run of success. I look forward to us competing against him.

not worried either about how those two are going to affect our performance in the game, what I’m talking about is those names have some cachet and by the time our game rolls around either they’ll be attracting a heck of a lot of attention because they’re doing well or everybody will be swimming like sharks in chum to finish them off... it becomes a little bit more than a no-name win in my opinion, it’s “culture” vs. “hired hands”!

It's probably more like "culture" vs. "desperation," to see some of the folks talk on the Sun Belt board. I, for one, hope they can right the ship and become competitive. There's a boatload of talent in their immediate area, so if they can just defend their backyard better, they should reach a level of success that may help them stay afloat.

The duck commander Robertson family must have poured some money into the program to get the big name hires. :)

Sorry to hear about this. Booby Bowden must be nearing the end. Won many games...The below is what my most cherished memory....UL Monroe coach Terry Bowden has left the team to be with his father, Hall of Fame coach Bobby Bowden, who has end-stage pancreatic cancer.

The team confirmed that Terry Bowden traveled Thursday to Tallahassee, Florida

It was while Bowden was head coach at West Virginia that he came in contact with Marshall coach Jack Lengyel and assistant Red Dawson just months after the MU program was devastated by the Nov. 14, 1970 plane crash that killed 75 players, coaches, staff members and fans as they returned from a game at East Carolina.

Lengyel was interested in running the veer offense used by Bowden and the Mountaineers. Bowden allowed Lengyel and Dawson full access to WVU’s playbooks and game films as well as a chance to watch spring practice in order to learn the basics of the veer.
