I think your facts may be a little off. I don't know it was as much UNCC being smart as much as it was timing and being right place/right time.APPdiesel wrote:I commend Charlotte for establishing football (responsibly) the way they did. Charlotte played a few years as an FCS, got their feet wet, went through the initial growing pains of college football at an "easier" level then moved. Someone on here who paid attention to Sunbelt goings-on before we joined may be able to shed some light on their entry...but they bit off way more than they could chew from day 1. It seems maybe Benson was just dead set on securing the Atlanta market and let GA State throw themselves to the wolves. Winning 1 game in 3 seasons means a LOT to recruits. The better athletes won't go to a losing program, so it's like they're trying to climb Everest on their knees.
UNCC declared FBS before playing a single down of football. Their first season coincided with our 1st FBS transitional year. They have accelerated the process to as fast as allowable by NCAA rules. Their first transitional year was just the 2nd season in school history. They just played game 1 of their 3rd season. So no, not a few FCS seasons to get feet wet.
Georgia State on the other hand had played their first season in 2010. They then joined the CAA and played there for a season, before joining the Sunbelt. GaSt's first transitional year was during year 3 of their program.
The difference between the two, UNCC knew before they started playing they were going FBS and were able to immediately start building recruiting classes with that in mind. GaSt on the other hand found out after they had completed their 2nd season. Regarding recruiting, I read on BBS (not sure if true or not), but GaSt still doesn't have a full allotment of scholarship players. If true, I wonder why? can anyone confirm?
