Yep. Starting out at 4 in 2014 but IMO it will go to 8 or 16 very quickly.

Re: App needs to be in "The Group of Five"
From an article on CBS Sports.com-http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootbal ... e-done-yet
Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky was looking to the future.
"Our deal is to be the conference that really represents the next generation of great programs," Banowsky said. "We target large markets, generally. We target growth markets. We find universities that have their best ahead of them in terms of potential, that have invested in facilities, that are gearing up and getting ready to go, and then we give them a stage and a platform to participate."
Let's break this statement down.
1. "Our deal is to be the conference that really represents the next generation of great programs," . That's why they take schools that have no football program and schools that haven't had a winning record or a half full stadium in years.
2. We target large markets, generally. I going to give my shocked face now.
3. We target growth markets. Translation-we go after places with people. Doesn't matter if they support or even care about the school that's close by.
4. We find universities that have their best ahead of them in terms of potential Translation-We have no idea what they can do because they have no football history or have never been able to fill even half their stadium.
5. that have invested in facilities, that are gearing up and getting ready to go Again, startup programs and those who have no fan base whatsoever.
6. then we give them a stage and a platform to participate-left out the rest of the quote- "and we will be hitting our knees ever night hoping that these programs can put 5 to 10k in the stands or we're going to look like a bunch of idiots"
What a complete load of crap. We have a bigger fan base, brand, and name recognition than more than half of these schools and we are still on the outside looking in. Just once I would like for one of these guys to tell the truth. "We look at where the school is PERIOD. We HOPE that will translate into butts in seats PERIOD. Nothing else matters. If we really cared about quality of program and fan support we would be looking at schools like Appalachian State."

Kwame Brown was the poster child for "upside". If they want to be a conference full of Kwame Browns, then they can suffer the fate of the teams that chose to sign Kwame Brown.firemoose wrote:From an article on CBS Sports.com-http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootbal ... e-done-yet

My response to this dribble from the C-USA commissioner would be to quote Shawn Elliott at the UM game, "They don't have a clue."

That crap about DII is bull shit. It's as trite as those who say we are shooting for the Rose Bowl whan we hit FBS. No one advocates DII just because some people don't want us to be a mediocre middle of the pack program.

Perhaps I misunderstood your point, but "I don't see any playoff" indicated to me you would not be in favor of being a part of that group since there wasn't one. If so, I apologize.bcoach wrote:I don't know that it does? Re: App needs to be in "The Group of Five"
Some people think that FCS is a good spot for us. Financially we can fit and maintain a level of competence and feel that FBS may be too expensive for us to survive any higher than midle of the pack. The most we can hope for in FBS is to win a conference title every now and then and every so often get to compete in a no name bowl along with 50% of the rest of FBS. Oe doesn't have to choose between FCS and D II. It's absurd to suggest that we move down when we are at a level that many consider a good fit.

No that battle was over a very long time ago. We will be part of that group if it is formed. The heading said playoff which I think would be a great idea but then turned out to be just a monitary split which is not a playoff.Kgfish wrote:Perhaps I misunderstood your point, but "I don't see any playoff" indicated to me you would not be in favor of being a part of that group since there wasn't one. The point is some people keep bringing up playoffs as a big reason to stay where we are, but the fact is FCS (especially the SoCon) are moving in a direction that is not beneficial to ASU. Some people seem to ignore that fact and remain status quo. Just look at the comments GSU's AD made if you need a good reason why we should get out of FCS.

Been middle of the pack FCS for some years now, now would be a great time to move "up" by moving down to D2. National Championships are all that matter, right?

JT: It gets under my skin, too. You guys in the "can't get out of FCS soon enough crowd" have some good arguments why FBS is better for us. I'll give you that we'll have a better opportunity to play stronger opposition in football, possibly at KBS. But in my opinion this is the lamest, dumbest argument the FBS crowd could make. No one ... I mean NO ONE ... is suggesting we drop down a division. That has never been open for discussion. Yet some of you like to bring it up like it's some great revelation. You only weaken your argument when you bring up such nonsense.

The last part of this is what bothers me most about moving up - money, lack of to be specific. The ASU admin has said they want to make the move w/o raising student fees. That means those of us who contribute to Yosef need to step up big and we can expect higher ticket prices. I know we are not Ohio State and we will not see > $70 ticket prices but $45 regular and $50+ for high interest is a real possibility. Raising student fees would hit me also since I have a kid at App currently.

Re: App needs to be in "The Group of Five"
Not really. FCS is pretty much the same as D2, just costs less. Small compact conferences, equal TV coverage, playoffs, the chance to win a NC. It fits the bill for what most of the FCS stayers say they want, even better than the FCS does. D2 would provide more playoffs, more NCs, and cost the school far less money.AppGrad78 wrote:JT: It gets under my skin, too. The differences between D2 and FCS are small. The differences between FCS and FBS are great. Considering the similarities is practical. Just because the comparisons dont fit what some want to hear, doesnt make it wrong.

I see no reason why we can't have a playoff when the BCS will have one.
The way I understand it is that when the new "playoff" system starts there will be no BCS. Yes, the teams that are now BCS will have the most likely chance of being in the "playoffs" but a team from "the group of 5" will be eligible as well, if they qualify. Technically there will be no "BCS" anymore.
