Over/Under Sunbelt survival

Unread post by Stonewall » Sat Jun 22, 2024 4:20 pm

As is , 5 years maybe 6. Beyond that I’m taking the under. Where we end up is anyone’s guess but it seems a realignment of the realignment is around the corner. Gill is under criticism from on high as a weak advocate in all things NCAA and CFP . He seems like a survivor though. He’ll land on his feet. My opinion.

I guess it all depends on if Skynet has taken over by then or not?

During the last large-scale conference realignment (read: scramble), Gill shined in his ability to exercise patience and invite universities for reasons other than merely the size of their respective TV markets. This was a boon to the SBC: the level of competition increased across multiple sports, historic rivalries were renewed and a tighter geographic footprint meant lower travel costs for conference members.

I agree with you that the clock is ticking on the SBC, but that’s not all bad since the brand’s value continues to suffer (whether it’s justified or not). Gill will land on his feet; his type of clear thinking is in short supply. College football needs unique perspectives now more than ever.

Or, it could play out that Gill is a visionary. The Big 2 (Top 40-50 teams) could split off and the rest of the college athletic world realizes that regional conferences with manageable travel (for athletes and fans) is the way to go and more desirable.

I’d give certain ADs more of the credit for who was added than the commissioner.

Although sbc has done a great job competition wise for the Sun Belt. It is evident in conference ratings. However, it is not moving the scale in terms of TV payouts to keep the conference competitive long term (what is defined as long term is subjective given landscape). The cost of college football is only going to get more expensive.
In my opinion, SBC needs to try to align ourselves with quality teams that are also in larger TV markets....USF, Memphis, etc ...or if ACC craters, if any teams left standing...add them or in a new conference.
I may be wrong, however, I feel like the lesser competitive schools that are in big 10 or SEC may survive in those respective conferences given history in the conference. It is the the lesser competitive schools in ACC and Big 12 that may be looking for a new conference.
It will be interesting to see how it plays out that is for sure.
Everyone has their preferences on sports, etc. my preferences are football, men's and women's college bball and baseball..So, my perspective is very slanted to those sports.
So, in my dream world... I would like to see the stadium enhancements made so facility wise we may have an opportunity (however small it may be) to be attractive from that perspective if not TV market wise to maybe get into a conference with some teams that may not make it to the major conferences. Hypothetically, if wake or state are left out of the conferences...that is a win for us as they are near decent size TV markets ...cincy, ucf as well for example..Having teams like that coming to KBS is a h€ll of a lot better than ULM, Arky St.

I have zero feel for what MIGHT happen with realignment. My crystal ball has been horribly inaccurate over the last few years in that area. My opinion though is that the SBC is positioned better than any other G5 conference with strong regional rivalries among strong committed athletic programs. The most likely / logical alternative to me is the one that involves a joint realignment between SBC and CUSA in order to further tighten the regions. I think that option might actually be decreasing in likelihood though as the possibility of a depleted ACC becomes a possibility, but I still see that as unlikely. It makes sense along athletic lines but the institutional arrogance is a major hurdle.

Gill had little to do with the Sunbelt expansion other than implementation once decisions were made and offers accepted according to the people who were involved at the time. At least the ones I have talked to. And I was talking to them during the process. Our former Chancellor played a much larger role. Some say she was the catalyst.

Fair point. But for the vast majority of the public, perception is reality. So Gill will be OK, regardless of how much he contributed to the latest conference additions.

Of course. I don’t think he will suffer. Too much anyway.

I know the g5s don't have a lot of pull/say but the m2 and g4 need to hold out for the NIT 16 team playoff as part of signing for the CFP one spot agreement. And that tournament money should be divided by the 16 teams that make the NIT. This is in my opinion as good as it gets if we stay in the new FBS with the p2s. If the g5 rep has to play number 1 in the first game CFP each year, i would rather be in the NIT Football 16 tournament. This 16 team tournament will have some big names that are beatable. Number 1 each year will be a tough task.

Money will be tough on everyone not in the p2s. (Which will include some proud past teams)
