Article should have included:
* Did not play Ark. State or ULL. Won conference because APP STATE beat both of those teams on the road.

Eh, they had a great year. Congrats to them. The conference "championship" should carry an asterisk due to the unbalanced schedules, but you still have to give them credit for beating the teams on their schedule (including us).

I don't buy the notion that GS' Championship should have an asterisk unless you think the GS admin had a hand in making the schedules to "avoid" ULL and Ark St. If you feel an asterisk should accompany their title, you must also believe that both ULL and Ark St. should also have an asterisk for not playing GS. For all we know, both teams could have lost to the Eagles and given our Mountaineers 2nd place in the conference.
Teams can only play and win the games on their schedule. This is akin to fans demeaning Marshall's "soft" schedule without taking into consideration that P5 Louisville pushed last year's scheduled game back against the Herd, leaving Marshall scrambling to fill their slate. Was it weak? Sure but it was not intended to be. With the ebb and flow of programs and how far out schedules are set, who really knows which programs will be good in 3-5 years to give your program a higher strength of schedule.
I'm pretty sure fans from both former Socon programs thumped their collective chest when it came to competing in the Sun Belt immediately. This should not be a surprise to anyone. Our game with GS will continue to be a marquee match-up for years to come with the belief that it will have an impact on the conference championship, just as it did in the Socon.
As to the article, that's a nice piece promoting the Eagle's traditions. The downside to the article was their AD trying to "call out" other G5 programs for not scheduling them, namely MWC and CUSA. He needs to take a more humble approach than that of his fan base.

Beating everyone? They lost 2 games last year and have a losing record against their rival.
They rode our coattails to the FBS and lucked out with a cakewalk schedule while we won them the trophy by beating the also-rans.
App State made Georgia Southern.

ULL and A-State don't have anything to put an asterisk by, as they didn't win the conference. I don't really think Southern should have an asterisk, though. Just making the point that being conference "champions" doesn't quite mean as much when you played an easier schedule than anyone else in the league, including not playing the second-place team.
Has nothing to do with GSU's admin and everything to do with the Sun Belt. Until they find a way to stage a championship game, I wish they'd at least make some effort to make the schedules a little more balanced.
As I said before, though, I agree that Southern deserves a ton of credit for the season they had.

We know it. They know it. That's enough for me. The reminder will come on October 22.MAD Doctor wrote:Article should have included:

I just REALLY want to beat these guys like we beat Wofford on Halloween night. Don't get me wrong I want us to win all our games but I hate Georgia Southern with a fierce passion!
