I was wondering if the war drums have started to beat up in HokieLand? - Figured some of you guys in the Old Dominion may have heard some rumblings - I occasionally check out The Daily Press out of Hampton/NN --- I'm guessing it won't be long before Coach Beamer will be getting the old Bobby Bowden, Jerry Moore, Paterno questions - Of course, Beamer is younger than those guys were but I just figured that knowing fan bases it is probably brewing ---

Yep I figured the message boards would be on fire - have you read any journalistic type pieces? ---

As VT dominates the news here, I am watching his interviews after games and wondering if he is ok. He just sounds strange. He sounds defeated and very very tired. He sounds like a little old man. Lots of excuses and no solutions. Things like " The kids are playing hard" in a very soft voice.

He's under contract until 1/1/19.

Hired his son as RB coach, isn't sitting well with fans.

This won't end well. I think we've all seen this movie before.

Things do change. People were actually very excited when he hired his son. He was a great recruiter and has had some pretty good RBs over the years.
I don't see Coach lasting till 2019 if for no other reason than I think he has some kind of problem. He seems frail. He is just not the same guy.

It is a shame. I sure am no VT fan but I have a lot of respect for him. With some exceptions he has run a clean program and they have been a very good team over the years.

yes it is - I am a VT fan - In fact, I am probably a real anomaly - growing up and into my 20s/30s my 2 favorite football teams were WVU and VT --- kind of like some kid here saying his two favorite basketball teams and Duke and UNC --- my hometown had 2 radio stations - one carried WV, the other carried VT ---

I am in the heart of VT country but am a transplant. I do know though that your two favorite teams growing up is rather different.

He just signed a contract extension at the beginning of the year thru 2019 (I think), this was probably done to protect the upcoming recruiting classes. But now, since he has gotten the extension, and I assume guarantee money, he has VT in a tough spot, fire him, you have to pay his salary and a new coaches salary, plus you go on record for firing the legend who built the program, or you sit back, let him coach the next 5 years, and risk him destroying everything that he had built the last 25 years, good luck with that one.

I would highly doubt he will be "fired". He will "retire" when it comes to that. VT does not do messy splits. The last two BB firings have been " ok all done, what's next".

He has ruffled some feathers in the Roanoke area. Despite his large salary, Coach Beamer makes several commercials for different companies. One has touched a sore spot. He recently shot an ad for an HCA hospital in Salem. That didn't set well with the largest health care provider in the region, Carilion Clinic. Tech's medical school based in Roanoke is a joint effort with Carilion. Seems many Carilion employees have beseiged Tech's AD about the ad and resulted in Tech's administration trying explain that Beamer's contract gives him the freedom to make such ads while restating their close ties to Carilion. I think the coach is beginning to wear thin on many folks up here, especially now that Tech has played so poorly this season.

The inevitable end when coaches take "he's earned the right to retire whenever he wants to" too literally.

the question is, will he accept retirement or will he say no to retirement and force the hand of the administration. I get the impression he still feels he can coach and in his mind he isn't going anywhere.

and he may not go anywhere. He may solve whatever his problem is and come back strong. What I do know is that they have a VERY talented administration and whatever happens will be done properly.

HAPAPP is correct about that for sure but there are also a bunch of us who absolutely LOVE his commercial.

Not just Jerry and little Jerry but when Cobb hired his wife as soccer coach.
