So Miss, Michigan both lose

Unread post by hapapp » Sun Sep 28, 2014 11:53 am

After knocking us off last weekend, So Miss hosted defending CUSA champ Rice. Rice entered the game at 0-3 with losses to ND, Tex A&M, and ODU. Rice came away with a 41-23 over the Golden Eagles.

Michigan hosted Minnesota on Saturday. The Golden Gophers defeated the Wolverines 30-14, dropping them to 2-3 on the year.

I think it safe to say that Ga Southern is the best team we have faced this year. After NC State's competitive loss to Fla State, Southern's last minute defeat at the hands of the Wolfpack would seem to suggest that they may be the SBC's best. They certainly have the best offense in the conference, as they have consistently been able to move regardless of the opposition.

Looks like South Alabama righted their ship just in time as well unfortunately.

No doubt, we don't start our SBC play with the easiest opponents.

Yes, the Michigan (ass kicking) and Southern Miss losses are looking more worse as time passes.

I'm becoming more and more convinced that MIchigan based their whole season around beating us and that they put everything that had into, because they've been crap since. So Miss, we should've beaten. stats show that. If we had a competent kicker, at the least, we beat them by 10

Hardly the case, and people need to stop deluding themselves on this. If the first quarter of the season has shown anything it's that we stand a good chance of being the game everyone looks their best against. we are playing FCS quality players against an FBS schedule, and the results are hardly surprising.

I take nothing out of this season of any import, because our best players are spending all year in the weight room getting ready for their first taste of action next year.

So we do this two years in a row?

For all that people say this, I'm not really sure where it comes from re: last year. Our 2013 class included something like 16 signees, and I believe six played. 10 redshirts isn't all that large of a number, and while some have played well this year, it's not like they're just night and day better than anyone else we've got.

That is why we have two years of transition, yes. I said last year that people were not going to handle another bad season should we have one, and it's taken a month into 2014 to prove that true. We were a 4-8 FCS squad a year ago, and no matter how you want to slice those 8 losses we were nothing more than an average FCS squad at best. Most of those same players are now playing rosters full of FBS caliber players, and the ones that may be FBS caliber have zero experience leading into this season. I fell victim myself to unrealistic expectations in the offseason, and thought 6 wins was possible. My wakeup call came 2 weeks ago that that was not going to happen without some serious change of fortunes, and right now if we go 4-8 again I might go so far to say I'd be a little surprised in a good way.

Experienced players of lesser quality + young players of higher quality (if they are even playing) + young coaching staff = 2014. Strap in boys and girls, the ride is only going to get rougher from here on out.

Okay, I get it. I really did not have very high hopes for this season either but I am struggling with how red-shirting this best recruiting class in the Sun Belt helps? They will still be freshman next year with zero experience. How many years will it take to build a FBS roster like this? Are we just going to trickle them in. I would understand if we were stacked and needed to stagger the talent. But I believe you make a good point that we are basically fielding mostly FCS talent this year against FBS teams. I still have not made my mind up this year. I have seen flashes of a team that could win four or five games. I am waiting until next week. We lose and look bad losing next week then I agree, strap in.

Why waste a year of eligibility on a meaningless season is my guess? At least they get a year to focus on strength and learning the playbook.

Just read that the Roseboro kid from Lincolnton has de-committed from Michigan. Is leaning toward NCSU.
