Florida State's Winston out whole game
Late last night, Jameis Winston was suspended for the entire game today against Clemson. Should have been the whole game to begin with. Apparently some folks late last night bent the ear of the FSU interim president. IMO, it was the right move for FSU to make. If nothing had been changed the stage was set up for Winston to enter as a "hero" in the second half. Winston's "issues" are catching up with him and now are hurting his team's chances to win a national title... Just wonder if Jameis will ever get it.

Re: Florida State's Winston out whole game
Here's what is really wrong with this...
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr- ... 46985.html
What happens when one of those that just merely tweeted what was going on (as probably 99.9% of what tweets are about) gets threatened, bullied, hurt, and have to leave school because folks blame them not Mr. Winston? As much as I love sports, it gets tiring to hear of so many troubled athletes saying 'sorry' and all is well in the world.
I now step down from my soapbox... Carry-on.

Not defending Winston here -( the sexual assault has gone through the system and I don't want to get into that - I have ZERO tolerance for a man who assaults a woman) --- Just speaking of his stealing crablegs and his outburst in the student union --- Let me ask this - Does anyone remember how much Manziel was suspended for "lying" about not getting paid for all his autographs? about being hauled out of a party by the cops for being drunk and disorderly? --- Did you guys have the same problem with Texas A&M as with FSU? ---

It has not gone through the system. FSU is being investigated for a title 9 violation for their handling of the situation. He also faces a violation of the student code of conduct charge for the incident. This guy is trash and should be held accountable.WVAPPeer wrote:Not defending Winston here -( the sexual assault has gone through the system and I don't want to get into that - I have ZERO tolerance for a man who assaults a woman) --- Just speaking of his stealing crablegs and his outburst in the student union --- Let me ask this - Does anyone remember how much Manziel was suspended for "lying" about not getting paid for all his autographs? about being hauled out of a party by the cops for being drunk and disorderly? --- Did you guys have the same problem with Texas A&M as with FSU? ---

Who were they kidding with a 1/2 suspension? What a farce. If a player deserves suspension for disciplinary matters, then a one game suspension should be the bare minimum.

I agree - Texas A&M only suspended Maziel for a half AND that wasn't even a game against their top conference rival ---DoubleA wrote:Who were they kidding with a 1/2 suspension? What a farce. Sorry, jumped the gun. I did have a problem with JM personally. I am actually really surprised by FSU response. It is right but not expected at all. If this was left to the coach or AD he would be playing. As for the larger social issue I think you may be alluding to, I might be totally wrong but I doubt it is in play here. A&M decided winning was more important than integrity of the institution. FSU president stepped in and said enough. Also the elevated attention to treatment of women as it relates to what he said may have affected the decision. In the end he is an idiot and I hope FSU gets took to the curb today. Maybe his teammates will hold him accountable.WVAPPeer wrote:True - meant the legal system as far as criminal charges - but you didn't answer my initial question ---appbio91 wrote:It has not gone through the system. I want to inject one more thing here that has nothing to do with this conversation. I was a big Jerry Moore fan (still am really). But at the end of his career he chose winning over the integrity of the University several time in dealing with players - Price, Tanyi et al. He totally lost my support as a leader at that point. Again nothing to do with this but just pointing out we have had these decisions in the past and also got it wrong. So far I think Satt is running a tight ship that we can be proud of.

Agreed --- no I don't think this was more of an issue of race as it was that Johnny Manziel was the golden boy - sure, there are those who view Winston in a more harsh light because he is African-American - but that wasn't what I was driving at as much as I was about what a farce the Texas A&M "suspension" was and how the NCAA closed their eyes - and yes, you are correct that I do believe the climate now had an effect --- yes Winston stole $30 worth of crab legs - what's the guess on how much Manziel earned with his autographs? - many thousands is my guess and he wasn't signing them in his front yard but in ritzy hotels around the country --- I guess I'm just fed up with the lack of real enforcement by the NCAA and the National Felons League ---appbio91 wrote:Sorry, jumped the gun. Re: Florida State's Winston out whole game
Yes, I had (and still have) trouble with Manziel. It sickens me to listen to a game he's playing in or even sitting on the sidelines and hear the announcers droning on and on and on about him as if he IS the team. In A&M's bowl game last year, there was more talk of Manziel when the A&M defense was on the field than there was of the A&M defense or Duke's offense. The more attention paid by announcers and media, the more Manziel types will show out.
Same thing goes for Winston. If he does something stupid and detrimental to the university and athletic department, bench him. Don't fan the media flames with a one half suspension followed by a full game suspension. Just bench him and shut up. Simple message - player ran afoul of team and athletic department behavioral expectations; player is suspended; end of story. No new message each time the media calls. No press conferences for the player. One announcement from the athletic department. Period.
If our society ever hopes to change the behavior of kids like Manziel and Winston, we've got to quit putting them in the spotlight for stupid. I realize that I, too, have just honored stupid by typing this post ... no more from me on the subject.

Daphne - I agree, but a whole lot of this falls on the media - they drive stuff into the ground - they won't accept the simple reason "actions detrimental to the team, etc.," they keep digging, asking, speculating, quoting unnamed sources, etc. --- Now I agree that we have to have a media which digs in sports and politics but they push this sports stuff way beyond reasonable ---

Very true, but it primarily falls on us as ticket buyers and boosters/alums. The media can't fire a coach. The fanbase can. Often, though, we protect our guys and prioritize wins over integrity.WVAPPeer wrote:Daphne - I agree, but a whole lot of this falls on the media - they drive stuff into the ground - they won't accept the simple reason "actions detrimental to the team, etc.," they keep digging, asking, speculating, quoting unnamed sources, etc. --- Now I agree that we have to have a media which digs in sports and politics but they push this sports stuff way beyond reasonable ---

You betcha I did. And I had the same problem with ASU's "bad boys." It's everywhere and there's only one way to stop it. Park stupid butts on benches and let 'em sit and watch the action from afar. Then, if it continues, dismiss 'em from the team and pull their scholarships at year's end.
Winning isn't worth throwing away one's integrity. And who knows, if you play it straight consistently, you'll probably win more of those situations than you lose. And you'll be using those situations as teaching moments for the goofy eggheads or the immature or the narcissists or the criminals who've "found their way" onto your team's roster.

Just wonder if Jameis will ever get it.
There's a good chance that (if he keeps showing the untouchable attitude) Winston will eventually take it too far and pay a dear, dear price. He's already shown that he can't be trusted by women or around women. FSU's women faculty and students have his number. They are starting to compartmentalize him where he belongs. Today he begins to get the message. It may already be too late for him. Can he change at this late date in his makeup as a citizen?

If FSU manages to lose tonight I am sure that JW's teammates will take over in the maturation process of JW. If the QB suspension causes a team to lose a game because he does something stupid and hurts the chances to reach team goals, then I am sure the seniors and real leaders will take over.

If you are pulling for JW to come down to earth, though I doubt it is likely that he will, you will be pulling for Florida State to beat the pants off of Clemson tonight. Nothing deflates the ego of an athlete quicker than him being shown that his team can win without him.
