With increased focus on the cost of higher education, I would expect more scrutiny of athletic and other fees at many other schools, not just in VA.

The reality is that if schools did away with near-luxury dorms, sprawling student unions, luxury fitness centers, upscale dining facilities, and athletic programs (and thus the fees associated with all those things), they could cut the total cost of attendance substantially without any change in the academic side of the university. I'm not saying that's what students want, or that such a place would be my first choice of a school to attend, but simply that all those things cost significant bucks at most universities today.
