I’m a manufacturing accountant who sees P&L’s and balance sheets every day. My brain tells me that there is no way this is sustainable especially at mid and lower tier schools. I’ve seen folks comment on this board many times in regards to the perceived notion that App State has some huge surplus of money to pay athletes. How in heaven’s name can a school pay for scholarships, salaries, stipends and now flat out extortion payments?

Probably not....but, as long as rich alumni have checkbooks, schools will try to make it work.

At mid and lower tier schools, are many spending well beyond their means?..have no clue ....it just seems the G5 are losing most of good players to P5. I get the losses may be due to nil where schools may not be directly involved...

The interesting part is that I don’t think that NIL had any part in this issue as schools are just now allowed to pay athletes directly. If this new model starts to create more of these program deficits, it will be interesting to see how lawmakers step in since these are public, state funded institutions.

I think NIL may have driven the decrease in donations that was mentioned in the article, but you are right, when these big schools have to factor in an additional $20+ million for revenue sharing, many of them are going to be in trouble.

And I know that donation reduction in lieu of NIL was/is a major concern for Gillin and Ransdell when it was proposed.

I honestly hope it happens so we can get some sanity back in college athletics. The amount of money being tossed around is ridiculous. It started with the mega TV deals 15-20 years ago and has only gotten worse. A correction like this could help save us and the rest of the G6.

I'm aware it's not apples to apples, but I'm sure our deficit is somewhere on the same page adjusted for the ratio of inflow:outflow.

It sort of feels like any donated money with this new and great system is essentially throwing it into a tornado. Maybe some of it will land at home, most of it is going to end up in another city or state. Before NIL/TP rule changes, I knew the names of almost every single person on the roster. Now I'm not anywhere close. My sentiment is slowly turning to feeling like I'm donating to a professional sports team, which doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I only see this getting worse.

The part that really concerns me is this:

"Reserve funds and past and future earnings are expected to cover the $37.7 million deficit, according to the report."

I can imagine with our spending we don't have a lot of reserve funds, and future earnings are in a major limbo. I guess that could go either way, and I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think I've ever seen a more "the sky is falling" scenario than this.

All these debts these programs are getting into just remind me of this clip every time they ask for donations or "investments."

I guess that is what it costs to win a National Championship and still lose to Michigan.

Michigan doesn't matter. They paid $23 million for a national championship and that's what they got.

They could lose to Michigan most years...if the win the natty ..not optimal for everyone in
the fanbase...but I think most would take that result if they had to

The only time losing those rivalry games means anything is when the team otherwise sucks. Carolina and or Duke could go 0-3 against the other guy in the regular season and ACC tournament but win the Natty and they use that as crap talk.

They do that because it hurts.
