We are in need of someone to take over the maintenance of the MMB. Yosef has done it for a long time, and we are grateful for all he has done, but life happens and he no longer has the time to devote to its upkeep. Western is getting a nice and much-needed boost. Maybe they can upgrade some of their stadium seats. I have to admit that their academic campus is really nice these days.

Good one. But we were once in their shoes or worse.

They were a peer in many senses of the way we use the word for colleges and universities in the US, but I am not sure we were ever in their shoes. Our flagship sport was never that bad for that long. Academically we have never needed any help with cut rate tuition to attract students. And they have had programs and departments cut, and as far as I know that has not happened at App State, thank goodness.
I am not sure we were ever in their shoes, and certainly not worse.

I beg to differ. Before your time, during the Bob Waters era, they ruled us, be it ever so brief. Their half stadium was a more modern and functional facility than our full fledged crumbling old Conrad set up and sat more fans. One reason they have had to cut tuition is that they are located in nowhere land. Asheville is a was and they have nothing in common with the metro Atlanta area. They are a suburb of Sylva and Waynesville.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote: ↑Sat Aug 31, 2024 5:37 pmThey were a peer in many senses of the way we use the word for colleges and universities in the US, but I am not we were ever in their shoes. They got stuck in the 1970s. A variety of reasons. But there was a time when it was a fun rivalry. I don’t think it’s actually been matched. At least to date.

Yes they had a few years over 40 years ago where they could beat us in football but that is not the end all be all. They never had a larger enrollment that App that I am aware of, and certainly not since the NCAA years. We moved from the NAIA a few years before they did. They seemed to mostly always be playing catch up to us. Not in every case, but in a general overall case I just don't think we were worse off at any time.
And regardless of why they had to have the cut rate costs they had to have the cut rate costs.
I will give you that during the early years of Bob Waters that WCU had our number though it ended 9-11 to their favor so it was not overly one-sided in the end. But before Bob and certainly after I just don't see it.
Was Conrad really crumbling in the 1970s? I was there a few times and don't remember that being the case, though I admit to being young. At that point the stadium was not that old, though I know the winters used to be rougher years ago.

Bell bottoms and disco. If one had to be stuck in any decade, why choose that decade?

Disco was the late 70s and I’ll bet you still have some bell bottoms in your closet. Come on man, you know you dig the bell bottoms. I know you also like that early 70s protest Rock. I know I do.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote: ↑Sat Aug 31, 2024 6:42 pmBell bottoms and disco. If one had to be stuck in any decade, why choose that decade?

First, the 70’s was the best decade. Classic rock !
AND I’ll stand corrected but the story at the time was that KBS ( Conrad) east side-was condemned by local Government in the early 90’s which forced the state government to cough up money to upgrade. We had very poor leadership (administration and athletic) at the time and we really had no money. The same troubles (poor leadership and no money) Western and ETSU both have been and continue to fight.

A bit before my time. Firmly a GenX with 80s new wave. We had big hair, and loads of makeup which I also did not care for. I would have been a Rudie but I was likely the only fan of Two-tone ska in western NC.Mjohn1988 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 02, 2024 4:18 pmDisco was the late 70s and I’ll bet you still have some bell bottoms in your closet. I do love Fleetwood Mac, but it was Mirage and maybe Tusk before I was old enough to appreciate them as a fan. Been a big fan sense including pre Buckingham and Nicks joining.
