Biff Poggi and his UNCC 49ers
Biff is the head football coach, by the way.
This is literal insanity. The Observer's writer that covers the team recently said Biff isn't making media friends in Charlotte, which is the worst thing a new coach can do, especially in a pro sports city like Charlotte.

Re: Biff Poggi and his UNCC 49ers
The incoming AAC members are getting a half share of the tv revenue as a concession for expanding the conference. All those new members signed up to be a step sister up front. Why are they acting surprised now.

A half share and they’re expected to generate ~$12M additional dollars to keep up with the $50M budgets the AAC supposedly wants? I just don’t see how that comes to fruition.

Re: Biff Poggi and his UNCC 49ers
UNCC's winning formula is to go after Charlotte Metro businesses, the fan base isn't large enough to make up that gap i.e. ECU at the moment.
Winning on the field speeds up that process of course.
Some of their fans believe they are the next UCF, these are the same ones that claimed the App football program would be dead five years after they announced football.
I view them as maybe a USF long-term. The competition with pro-sports and so many transplants in the area fairly large hurdles.

Re: Biff Poggi and his UNCC 49ers
which is part of the calculus for hiring Poggi. UNCC knows they are in a financial strain. They promised the AAC they'd match the spending requirement AND drop $100MM on stadium expansion. All of this with having almost no fans and a small donor base. They don't have any money, they are mostly subsidized by student fees (66% school subsidy in FY 2021 78% in FY 2020 vs 48% and 57% at App, respectively) and they can't sell out their 15k stadium against a pretty good Big 10 school and an instate ACC team. But they want to double capacity?
Question: after a spectacular failure of hiring an outside of the box unknown candidate with little coaching experience, why would hire an outside of the box unknown candidate with little coaching experience?
Answer: he has an 8 figure net worth. I think UNCC was hoping he'd fund their NIL, maybe stadium expansion. He already took a $500k pay decrease to increase their assistant pool. Judging from their recruiting, hes probably personally funding their roster right now, although he was on local radio recently and said if UNCC fans up their NIL, they won't have the same roster in 2024. Says to me, like most rich people, hes unwilling to put a lot of his own skin in the game with unknown returns.

Re: Biff Poggi and his UNCC 49ers
There is no legacy base for UNCC and the fact that Charlotte loyalties are so diverse they will be behind for decades before they are even an after thought in Queen City sports.Saint3333 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 30, 2023 7:33 amUNCC's winning formula is to go after Charlotte Metro businesses, the fan base isn't large enough to make up that gap i.e. ECU at the moment.

Re: Biff Poggi and his UNCC 49ers
this is always going to be the problem for them being in a NFL/NBA city. No Fortune 500 company is going to invest in the UNCC football program directly because there isn't a value proposition for them. If they want a box to bring their suppliers/customers/board members too, these people aren't going to be interested in watching G5 college football when theres an NFL game in town. Maybe you get some of the local mom and pops or medium sized businesses to give you some $$, but UNCC has had that with Coca Cola consolidated, HT etc.Saint3333 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 30, 2023 7:33 amUNCC's winning formula is to go after Charlotte Metro businesses, the fan base isn't large enough to make up that gap i.e. ECU at the moment.

My company is a medium/large company with HQs or focus operations in Pittsburgh, Connecticut and LA. They keep seats at Steelers, Knicks and Lakers games because we have national and international clients. They are not (mostly) interested in seeing games at Pitt, UCONN and USC/UCLA. Maybe if it was USC/Notre Dame

Can we stop screaming “ratio” at tweets we don’t agree with? Just because more people disagree than agree (or more accurately more people were willing to pile on than come to your defense) doesn’t mean you’re wrong. It’s so lame and lazy.

For those that don't know...Biff Poggi is a former Hedgefund manager & HS headcoach from the baltimore area. His HS program had an HBO 4 part series on them. Apparently there will be HBO cameras again at UNCC.
His hire is an interesting choice for sure.

Biff is sorry y'all He wants bloggers and researchers to see his set of financial numbers that are more true than those pesky publicly divulged figures.

Thought they were supposed to be in the SEC or at the very least ACC by now?
Bet their two supporters are disappointed.

You have to wonder what Gramps thinks of this. I wonder if he sits Trey down and tells him to be better today than he was yesterday.

I guess they are trying to follow the Beach Chickens model of coaching hireskornegaylw wrote: ↑Fri Jun 30, 2023 10:29 amFor those that don't know...Biff Poggi is a former Hedgefund manager & HS headcoach from the baltimore area.
