He probably should have gotten college offers.
He played a lot of sports and was 6’6” 270 lbs out of HS

I think he was 220 coming out of high school. Great story though.

I think I saw a link to a story about him the other day showing his high school picture and then college. Apparently he was in the low 200's, went to college and put on the bulk and became a really good offensive lineman

Back in my day, we had some scrawny boys grow into beast mode over their career too.

Wonderful story. He was actually 6'5, 270 pounds and was a walk-on. I know he was listed as 6'6 but he measured at 6'5 at the combine and did not shrink.

NDSU has proven this whole "going P5 guarantees better draft stock" thing wrong. They have had 2 QBs go first round and a bunch of other OL drafted. Mauch by the spring of 2022 Mauch was on the radar of all 32 NFL teams. They all came through NDSU during the fall. His Senior Bowl performance helped him for sure. As long as a small school player goes to the NFL Combine or an all-star game then NFL teams can get as good of a gauge on them as they do a player from the SEC.

Cases like this are the exception. About half of the 5-stars each year end up in the NFL each year, and CFB is becoming more focused toward NFL development, for better and worse.

Once you get into the borderline 4-stars and 3-stars, then it gets more dodgy as recruits typically get those just because of their offers.

Teams do not draft players based on their star ratings. There were 5-star players who went undrafted. 5-star and high 4-star rankings could be done by you, me, and everyone else here. All you have to do is give them to those who get major P5 offers early on, have good size, production, and have a long offer list. You won't see a player get a 5-star rating with just 2-3 P5 offers. If they do then they drop them down to 4 stars.

This is the kid I was referring to when people got up in arms over the size of the Marshall o line transfer. Both came out of high school undersized, the respective staff realized it, put weight on them and put them in a be position.

Will it work out here? Maybe. But just because someone is undersized out of high school isn't a death sentence.
