Yeah but some coaches are going to do whatever it takes to help themselves. You think guys like whomUNCC just hired aren’t going to push the envelope to advance….

I believe that Appalachian recruits players with more class than some schools do, which keeps App from having the problems with players that other schools have.

I fully believe that that’s what Dabo Swinney thinks he’s doing too. Avoiding the portal as much as possible to avoid the problems it creates.

(Working in Greenville we spend a lot of time covering Clemson, that’s why I drew that analogy)

NIL should never have been a part of the school or school contracts...it should have been exactly like when I was in school. If I wanted to contract with a company to be a spokesperson for Makato's Japanese Steak house and Makato's wanted to pay for Name, image and likeness of SPACEMONKEY .....good for both Spacemonkey and Makato's but should not have had anything to do with APPSTATE....unless I wore Appstate paraphernalia or used words as if AppState also endorsed Makato's.

Armanti Edwards should have been allowed to line up contracts to be paid for NIL of Armanti Edwards...As soon as he says "Armanti Edwards quaterback of the Appalachian State Mountaineers" then it becomes a contract with Armanti and APP STATE.
Ehh that's not quite how things work. Plenty of athletes in the pro world do commercials and say hey I'm ______ of the ______ here to tell you about Viagra. Those guys aren't working their contracts through their teams.

When it comes to representation and using school name and gear while you work your NIL contract the thing I will be interested to see how it pans out is what the difference will be using a state institution vs private.
Actually, if you watch the commercials, they don't reference their teams. When members of the Carolina Panthers do local car commercials, they wear Panthers colors, but there is no Panther logo or Panther mention (unless it's an official sponsor who has a signed agreement with the team)

Just like this example: There is a graphic for Thomas Davis #58 and Greg Olsen #88, but no Panthers mention.

If it's Viagra, it's Joe Montana, former Pro QB or Hall of Fame QB (but, there's no tie to the 49ers or the NFL)

100% that and some other issues. The only positive of the portal is that if you miss bad on QB or another key position that you can quick fix it but all the portal is cause many problems. It is also providing a huge crutch for coaches who can recruit but can't evaluate talent. Just like with anything there are some coaches who are great and some who are not. We have had a few coaches as of late who are awful evaluators, which we have seen in all the QB, DB, and DL misses.

I'm wondering if head coaches who are aggravated with the portal decide to invest more in player personnel and coaches who can actually evaluate talent really well. It is good to get a player or two here and there but having to target 10 or so in the portal every year is a big task and not something that I think Shawn wants to do every single year.

Good luck Nick. NIL and the portal are going to destroy big time college football. It's a cancer that will permeate the locker rooms of the heavy weight programs.

I’m loving the prevailing argument (some here, mostly on Twitter) that because Nick is rich and because Bryce Young (a completely different person) made NIL money after he enrolled at Alabama (not before), that Nick isn’t allowed to have an opinion.

When Nick Saban asked “is this really what we want college football to be?” he was warning college football as a whole. It became it anyway. Nick Saban hates NIL but he hates losing more and he’s damn sure going to foster opportunities for Alabama players to get theirs. It doesn’t mean he’s going to allow himself to be extorted for an 18 year old girl’s law school admission and tuition.

Besides, what happens if player breaks up with girlfriend or transfers because he’s not getting playing time? Does she get kicked out of an academic program she didn’t earn her way into in the first place? Does she stay but lose her scholarship?

In an interview Nick Saban quoted as saying he told two players to look elsewhere because of NIL demands. One high school student asked Saban to get his girlfriend into Alabama law school and pay her tuition. A representative of another went to Saban and asked if Alabama would pay him $800k. Saban told him “he can find another place to play”.

The cash request is what it is…but now NIL has progressed to players asking for preferential treatment and tuition for their girlfriends.

You pro NIL folks, justify that for me.
I mean, what hes not saying is if he thought the $800k guy was good enough, he'd get on the phone with his boosters and get that guy $800k. He just wasn't worth $800k to Saban. Fair enough.

The first ask gets people in lawsuits if the truth was found out. Definitely not worth the risk.

Exactly. Adapt or die. Portal and NIL in current format are killing college football. There should be rules that are enforced. NCAA is useless because they don’t enforce anything.

I’m really not surprised a player asked that about law school for his sister but glad coaches like Nick say no. The way to stop insanity is push back and say no.

NIL is great for second and third tier programs at the P5 level that have lots of cash.
