Drinkwitz gets raise and 2 year extension

Unread post by HighlandsApp » Sat Nov 05, 2022 1:11 pm

This is a little surprising:

https://www.espn.com/college-football/s ... -extension

I'm surprised that he got a raise.

An extension with a pay cut but increased bonus measurements perhaps.

Mizzou looking like a rational school who looks at their budget and then the landscape of coaches and rationalizes who are they likely to be able to afford who is better....

I was surprised as well. Rational with money is a hard concept for a lot of folks.

Missouri happy to not be at the bottom of the SEC.

Are they afraid he will parlay the 5-7 record into some lucrative deal from Auburn?

Eli is 28-17 (62.2%) for his career...probably 29-19 when the regular season is over. Clark is 25-11 (69.4%) for his...probably 26-13 soon.

So what is the difference? I don't see a ton when you just look at the overall stats for two young coaches.

Maybe y'all should look at the stats the money movers are looking at instead of through the eyes of spoiled App fans who are lucky enough to pull for one of the top 20 programs historically in D1. (16th best program win percentage ever)

AppState
All-time record 653–349–28 (.648)
Bowl record 6–1 (.857)

Missouri
All-time record 697–580–52 (.544)
Bowl record 15–19 (.441)

They've suffered through a lot of bad years in their history, so any glimmer of hope is something they will throw money at.

https://mutigers.com/news/2022/11/5/foo ... kwitz.aspx

"Drinkwitz led the Tigers to bowl appearances in each of his first two seasons, joining former head coach Warren Powers as the only two MU head coaches to achieve that feat. Additionally, only Powers won more games in his first two seasons at MU (1978-79, 15) than Drinkwitz (11).

Inside Faurot Field / Memorial Stadium, Drinkwitz has won nearly 71% of his games, achieving the best home winning percentage since Dan Devine (1958-70, 73.1%).

On the recruiting trail, Drinkwitz and his staff have inked Mizzou's highest-ranked classes ever – No. 19 in 2022 and No. 20 in 2021. The nation's No. 1 wide receiver, Luther Burden III, was a member of the 2022 signing group.

Academically, the 2.92 team grade point average in Spring 2022 was football's highest in eighteen years, excluding the spring 2020 pass/fail period. "

What was the record at Missouri in the 2-3 years prior to him taking over the HC job? That hast to be factored into analysis process. Was it a complete rebuild or was he inheriting a quality program?

The previous coach went 25-25 and 13-19 in the conference. Barry Odom, was there from 2016-2019. Missouri hasn't been much since 2014. Pinkel was about to pull some great recruits while in the Big 12. He helped put up some big numbers. Then they moved to the SEC in 2012. They've had 2 good seasons since then, 2013 and 2014. Theyve gone 69-55 since joining the SEC and 23 of those wins were 13/14.

That's a lot of good data.

I'm just surprised that an SEC school had some sense to realize that there's no one that could get better.

I didn't love Drink while here but appreciate the season he gave us. I hope he doesn't well, but really don't care much one way or the other. I care how Satterfield does because he's an App guy! Drink has done a decent job at Missouri and probably earned an extension. That recruiting class and his close game against Georgia probably have them optimistic.

He did as well as 98% of teams could do. Missed a couple TDs that wouldn't have changed the outcome but made it closer. TN is on a different level with NFL ready athletes all over that offense.

Great stats to compare, but it ignores the simple fact that Mizzou is on a slightly upward trajectory under Drink while App has been on a slowly downward trajectory since Drink left.

Missouri record is worse now than before Drink took over. Are they on an upward trajectory outside of their prior year record and current year record? I do not follow them closely.

2015 5-7
2016 4-8
2017 started 1-5 (finished at 6-7)
2018 8-5
2019 started 5-1 (finished 6-6)
2020 5-5
2021 6-7
2022 4-6

So, they had a 19-7 stretch from the midpoint of 2017 through the midpoint of 2019. Otherwise a thoroughly mediocre program.

They are 0-3 in bowl games during that period.

Drink's biggest win was the victory over #25 South Carolina this year. His second biggest is the 26-22 loss to #1 Georgia. Otherwise, not much resume building going on.

Their winning coach Pinkel retired in 2015 due to non Hodgkin's lymphoma. He wanted to spend more time with family. After that Mizzou dropped off and has been roughly . 500 under the last coach and Drink .

Drink is 15-16 at Mizzou .483winning %
They were 17-20 the previous three years
.459 %

It is very slight.

I might be old and am not in tune with the newer lingo like branding and upward trajectory but for what it's worth is Missouri really on an upward trajectory? They seem to beat or lose to the teams worse or on par with them and get killed by the top teams. Basically they are a crappy SEC team.

What I see with Missouri was a program that was never truly equipped to compete in the SEC since they arrived. My expectation from the Drink hire is that it would require a total build up from the ground up and that would take several years to go through at least 3-4 recruiting classes. A quick fix might help the short term record but not put you in any position to compete with the top tier of SEC teams.

Therefore the analysis shown above about all the background work does appear that he is doing the right things to “build” the program while not tanking the record to 1-11 years.

Looks like they believe their building project is on schedule and those stats seem to reflect it.

But to be very clear, that was NOT where App was in 2020.

Simple fact is dink did not give us anything. We gave him something. We gave him a resume builder. You also can't say "since dink left" because he had absolutely nothing to do with building that team. He was nothing more than a babysitter or substitute teacher. He was there to do nothing more than to make sure they didn't touch anything hot, or run out in the hallway. I was and always will be miffed by the hire.
