Liberty To Construct 19 New Athletic Fields on River Islands

Unread post by HkyMtneer » Mon Apr 29, 2013 6:59 am

Liberty has decided to construct 19 new intramural/community-use athletic fields on two islands (James & Daniel) the university owns in the middle of the James River. They will spend $3 million to build two pre-fab bridges to connect to the islands. More details can be found in the attached News & Advance article.

Well I wouldn't put it past them to just cut down two trees and lay them across the water!

Who needs bridges when your alumni can walk on water?

The great thing about this project is that is seems it will really help the community go after larger youth soccer tournaments and such, and at the same time allow LU to continue fostering a great working relationship with some of the other colleges in the area (specifically Randolph-Macon which is adjacent to the park where access to the islands originates) to do something on land that has sat vacant for a number of years due to flooding.

Oh cool. Thanks for the info. I knew it had went Co-Ed, but did not know they had dropped the "Macon".

I built a bridge in my back yard that cost around $3 a few years back, and it still stands today. It is a weather treaded 2 by 4 and braced with old picnic tables parts. Got to get over in the woods and keep it cleared out of undergrowth and poison oak. I like to see what's out there, don't want anyone sneeking up from behind ya know.

Randolph-Macon-Lynchburg would've used too many hyphens.

"Treasure Island and Daniel Island, both owned by Liberty, were abandoned by the university in the 1980s after Treasure Island was ravaged by flood and fire."

What about the locusts?

Also lessens the confusion with Ashland's Randolph Macon College.

Not sure about locusts but I know that both islands, Treasure in particular, is home to a great number of Cicada's during their cycle, which I believe I read has them re-emerging this summer. It will be a noisy time of year to be working on the island clearing and constructing for sure!

Why would anyone want to construct facilities on land that suffered flooding?

Then you must have not been reading the rest of this thread, especially comments like "walking on water" "locusts" and "laying down two logs", etc.

At the root of it, all the slights made at Liberty can be traced back to one guy - Jerry Falwell.

So what? The man did not represent all of the faculty, students, and fans of Liberty University.

Aren't the islands in question a long way from the LU campus? If I remember correctly isn't Randolph and Liberty across town from each other? And if that's the case why would Liberty build their inter mural fields that far from campus? I can understand App's being away, but still we are talking a pretty short distance compared to LU and Randolph.
