I know many of you guys have followed the other SB teams since we have joined and had formed more of a perspective on the coaches of our opponents. I will say I was never overly impressed with Brown at Troy - he didn't seem to be able to win "The big game" -
I am really disappointed with his performance at WVU - terrible play-calling, poor clock and game management and at times he looks lost - and of course, he hasn't won an important game yet ---

it does seem that SB coaches seem to be the next group of "young" coaches to be moving up to P5 programs - I don't see it with him - Oh Well our APP Mountaineers will keep winning!!!

Usually I agree on your take but not here. Neil did well at Troy when everybody was beating on them. He made them almost into a conference contender and since he left they have fallen. He is almost .500 at WVU in two season (one being covid which shouldn't count) they are better than they were before he got there..... maybe you could say not much. I would expect in the next two seasons you'll see WVU in the 8-4, 9-3 range. He recruited well at Troy. I'd also say that Napier and Chadwell will be hot commodities at the end of this season too.

I don't think you can discount Covid year anymore. Everybody experienced it. Also, you are assuming ("would expect") he will do better than .500 and that is a BIG assumption. Based on what? Point is, .500 will not keep him a job very long in his current job.

I agree, thus far, he has yet to deliver at a level at which WVU will be satisfied.

We were all glad to see Holgerson leave - he wanted to be in TX and tried to leave even sooner but he did have a couple of teams that were in the mix late into the season. 2018 they were 8-1 ranked #7 before losing to OK ST 45-41 and OU 59-56 --- crushing our hearts once again

I am really disappointed in Neal Brown. Another losing season and now I think he's lost about 10 starters leaving. QB, RB and 3 top WRs and several key defensive players. Their top two recruits decommit. I thought he would bring a young and exciting leadership to WVU. They are just terrible on offense... defense is not bad, but just 6 points in the bowl game against a mediocre Big 10 team.
I SO WISH COACH SATTERFIELD HAD WAITED A COUPLE MORE WEEKS BEFORE TAKING THE LOUISVILLE JOB.
And that would have kept NewApp happy because he would still be a Mountaineer.

I wonder how many players percentage wise who enter the portal end up with any significant time somewhere else.

Some will - some won't. UGA CB Smith transferred from WVU, Wright their leading WR for the last 3 years and top return guy will. Doubt QB Doege will. RB sinkfield is at BC, CB Miller is at auburn
A DE went to northwestern. LB Cowan went to MD. TE Banks and WR Esdale will step up I believe. Surely more action to come.

It’s happening at a lot of places… you know “the grass is greener over there” mentality. The vast majority don’t go anywhere in the portal except 4 or 5 star kids…. We hear about them a lot.

bcoach, I’d like to see that statistic on how transfer fare, too. But it’ll take some computer digging research to find it and I can’t do it (surely somebody is keeping up with that - maybe some NCAA site?).

Haven't followed his time at WVU closely, but I don't agree with your evaluation of his time at Troy. Three straight 10-win seasons, a conference title, beat a top 20 LSU team, 3-0 in bowl games... seems like he won his share of "big games" to me. They were way down when he got there, too.

Well I guess I was equating "big game" with his losses to App. I just didn't think he was even on par with Coach Satterfield. He was surely moving up, and i had hopes for him at WVU. He's 17-18 in his 3 years there.

I would say he and Satt had each elevated their respective programs to the top of the conference, and were running pretty close. IIRC, Brown faced App three times. First was the 3OT loss in his first year when they were a heavy underdog. Second was their win over us in 2016. Third was the loss to us in Boone in the season finale in 2018.

So even just looking at App games, of the two that were "big games" he was 1-1, with the loss coming on the road without his starting QB.

Sorry, but I didn't remember that he ever beat App...anyway I was hoping for much better out of him at WVU. An overall losing record and 29 players to the portal is not what I classify as successful, more like below average.
Thanks for taking the time to comment, it's appreciated.

Yep, wrong Mountaineer but better than a Cardinal.

Depending on his contract and how WVU's finances are in the athletic department next year may be his break it or make it year as well as satterfield's unfortunately. Think both are probably really good guys and with enough time they will find their footing. Although what's going on at WVU is pretty bizarre.

Middle of the pack BIG12 isn't really bizarre for WV, that's about right for that program.

Other than a run with Rich Rod in the Big East, they are a solid 7-9 win a season program, never too low or too high.

I was referring to having a quarter, or maybe a third, of the team in the transfer portal
