Per Twitter, GaSo has fired their head coach. Kevin Whitley, and assistant on the current staff, will serve as interim coach for at least the time being.

Guess the Gumroots are tired of being mediocre. Problem is, they really need to ditch that archaic triple option and move into modern football but they just don't have the players for the switch. So their option is either continued mediocrity with the triple option or a complete 2-3 year (at a minimum) rebuild where they completely change their identity. They tried that before but gave up before it could be accomplished because the growing pains were to much for their fanbase.

There is much more to this story. Go to the Sun Belt message board. There’s a video of a Southern player standing on the roof of one of their school busses on the way to the stadium. If that wasn’t bad enough, he catches a beer from a fan and chugs it while the bus is moving.

Discipline has never been Southern’s strong suit, but according to their fans it’s gotten a lot worse under Lunsford.

Oh well, here’s to them tanking for the next few years!!

I was thinking last night that he would be gone at the end of the season(barring dramatic turnaround) unless they beat us.I had't heard about the above .

After the close game with ULL thought it wouldn’t happen. Oh well.

Lunsford likely had until USA before getting canned with an off week following but bus gate expedited the timeline. Not a good look for their program as I can’t imagine any recruits’ parents who witnessed bus gate would be to keen on sending their son to play for a coach who allows players to conduct themselves in such a manner prior to a game. Due to the nature of the situation, CL was likely fired with cause so the Eagles may escape having to pay out his contract.

The player seen surfing the bus and slamming a beer is GaSo’s DT, Gavin Adcock, who apparently is an aspiring country artist. To boot, Mr. Adcock also had 2 offsides penalties in the game against the Cajuns with one coming on a 4th and short resulting in a 1st down late in the game. Gavin could take this opportunity to sign a NIL with Bud Light.

I know we like to bag on the Eagles but it’s crucial that Benko makes the right hire for their program. Another Summer’s type hire might put them in a deep hole that could prove difficult to recover from. From a conference POV, the SBC is healthier when GaSo is competitive.

Haha, I saw the video and just thought that was business as usual down at Georgia Southern. Hell, their fans were loving it. Figured that was the type of team they wanted down there.

Yeah, didn't really think too much about that for them.

Believe I just saw it may have been a $2M buyout for Lunsford depending on the reasons given I guess.

I hate that offense, and if it means them sucking bad for 5 years, I'm fine with it. I know the conference is better when everyone is better, but I hate that O so much that I don't care.

I’ll second this, but with a slight adjustment... “I know the conference is better when everyone is better, but I hate EVERYTHING about Georgia Southern so much, I don’t care, and hope they suck for the foreseeable future”

We’ve gone to Statesboro for the game for over ten years. We have been spit on, cursed at, and had Bud Light cans, pizza cardboard, and plastic footballs descend upon us. Football players bus surfing and chugging beer before a game is not shocking.

Sign of a true rival. "I don't want them to succeed, even if their success helps my team's success." I feel the same way about GaSo.

I could care less if they ever win another game.

When they are strong it is better for us. Lets face it we need all the strength we can get in this conference. Sure I hate them but what satisfaction is there in beating them when they suck. Rivalries are important and they die when one side has no chance.

I couldn’t agree more. After my last trip down to Statesboro (the year Thomas got hurt) and having to endure what has to be the lowest form of fans in the game, I hope they suck for eternity. Even the SEC has some weak programs. I wouldn’t mind seeing this rivalry crumbling in our wake a la Western and Furman.

When it comes to them, plenty of satisfaction. I still enjoyed watching us kick the crap out of Western right up until the end of our last game. I don’t want to see a strong GS ever again. Hell with ‘em and their imbecile fans.
