I'll tell you I couldn't work with that guy - his 100 mph attitude and hyper personality would drive me crazy - certainly is a quality coach - I also find Minnesota as huge surprise ---

$18.5 million over 5 years and he's just 36 years old...the program is dealing with controversy at the moment so expectations are probably lower than they usually are. Doesn't seem to me like he's proven himself over the long haul...yes they had a tremendous season this year but, normally? He'd better bank a lot of that money...

Surprised. Thought he'd decided to hold out for a more plum job.

This is the rare occasion where the late bird gets the worm. It's a good deal for Fleck (good money, great facilities, he stays in the region more or less) and Minnesota got a coach with a hot hand without having to deal with much other P5 competition. No other plum jobs are open. If Fleck wants to go Big 10 this year, this was his shot.

To be honest, I'm a little surprised. I thought Minnesota might have gone after Craig Bohl, who did a hell of a job recruiting that area at NDSU and brought Wyoming to a new era of respectability. Maybe they did and he wasn't interested.

Bohl was obviously smart enough not to take a horrible job like Minnesota. Fools gold, at best.

Not sure why you guys think they would have offered Bohl first. I haven't heard his name publicly linked with any vacancies this year. Fleck was the much more in-demand coach.

Saw where WMU has a copyright on Row the Boat. Guess Fleck will have to find a new schtick

I just thought Bohl might have been a better fit, and has experience recruiting pretty much the same geographic footprint. He did a lot with less at NDSU and turned Wyoming around. I know Fleck was the buzzier coach, but the fact that he wasn't offered elsewhere suggests to me that he might not have been as attractive a choice as we might think.

And is Minnesota such a bad job? They've been mediocre but dangerous for a while, and they have some nice facilities.

Fleck was rumored to be the top choice at both Purdue and Cincinnati and reportedly told both no thanks pretty much right off the bat. The way the other jobs fell - LSU internally, Texas grabbing Herman, Oregon hiring Taggert, then USF replacing him with the ex-Texas coach and Houston filling internally - it minimized the domino effect and just didn't really create that opportunity in that level between LSU/Texas and Purdue/Cincy.

Bohl's really good and who knows if Fleck will be the better hire, but being 20+ years younger and coming off the Cotton Bowl, he was certainly the more obvious one.

Fleck may be taking over the "Edmund Fitzgerald" of the Big 10.
