Like--wrestling--soccer--golf--tennis--which should we drop and which should we keep?
Wrestling has helped place hundreds of coaching/teaching positions across NC and the country over the decades and soccer is America's fasting growing sport. If we can't afford to keep our non-revenue sports, we can't afford to be in FBS.
It makes no sense for App keep sports that have to be played in other conferences or are weather sensitive. The case against FH is well documented and Wrestling is going to remain in the SoCon which will now have teams from the Sun Belt, Big South, Atlantic Ten and OVC. Only 36 FBS schools have wrestling and 25 of those are in the ACC, Big Ten or MAC.
Because none of the area courses open until May our golf teams travel to Morganton to practice and we don't have an indoor tennis facility. It just doesn't make any sense - financially or competitively - to maintain these sports.
Except to remember why we have non-revenue sports. The kids who play them, and the impact they have on the university and the university on them.
It is part of the experience.

Correction - Boone GC typically opens by mid-March pending weather and course conditions coming out of the winter. Typically the golf team would travel to Lenoir which is roughly 1 hour - 1 hour 15 mins round trip. Travel costs for tournaments should not change hardly at all as they are meets, and you are not required to travel to conference foes until the conference championship. In the SoCon, the venue was the choice of the host team which rotated each year. Essentially, the golf programs can continue to only travel in the SE region as they have done previously before the move to the Sun Belt.

I believe we have agreements with some of the private and resort tennis clubs in the area to use their indoor courts. As for golf, they have an indoor practice facility in Varsity gym.

Correction - The Boone Golf Club's target for opening day 2014 is March 28 could be / most likely will be later. It all depends on the weather. Last year it was April 6. By then ASU will have two regular tournaments remaining before the SoCon Tournament on April 20. Wouldn't matter anyway because there is no agreement for ASU's golf teams to practice or play there. They do not use any of the courses in Lenoir and before Roan Valley was bought out (now Red Tail) ASU grad Sam Adams had arrangements for them to play there, but no longer. The ASU Golf press guide lists Mimosa Hills CC in Morganton and The Surf Club in N Myrtle Beach as our home courses.
I totally understand how the collegiate golf season works. The issue is practice time. Even the most ardent duffer knows if you don't practice you won't play well. ASU has won 2 SoCon Men's Championships 1974-1978. We have placed 4 men's players on the All SoCon team since 1990. The women have never won a SoCon title and put 5 on the all conference team since 1994 (when the sport was started).
I love golf. I've played a long time and watch a ton of it on TV. Unfortunately the reality is ASU's location is better suited for ice hockey than golf or tennis.

That's an incredibly idealistic response. The reality is we are throwing those kids out there at an extreme disadvantage. How does it benefit these young people by placing them in situations where they have little to no chance of succeeding against their peers? Does the same go for the "non-revenue sport" of baseball? Back when baseball was floundering Laney gave us the same excuse for funding it. We only awarded a few scholarships, had a terrible facility (by DI standards) and an even worse budget. The young men had no shot of being successful. We didn't have the money to buy decent uniforms, or even cold weather jackets to wear in the dugout. We couldn't feed players between double headers forcing the Mothers to make sandwich's for them. Cobb understood we either had to fund the program to a level where it will be competitive or cut it.
It is no longer the 70's. Gone are the days of having sports just to have sports. Due to the pressure on budgets brought on by Title IX - unless a school is among the elite conferences flush with cash from TV, major corporate sponsorship and big donors - university athletic programs have no option but to be conscious of the dollars and cents. Like it or not decisions on which sports to fund is based on dollars and cents. Especially non-revenue sports. In today's world schools have to be aware of ROI. Sad perhaps, but true.

Well, I care because I'm a golf fan and Furman does have some history, Brad Faxon, among others. The golf world cares as it has been talked about quite a bit since the announcement and now again since Faxon and others stepped up to save the program. If you don't care, no one is forcing you to read this or participate in the conversation.

Sorry I pissed in your corn flakes. It was a legitimate question. Wondered if it affected us in some way. I now see your interest and actually share it from that perspective.

Do they give enough to carry the program like Faxton and his counterparts are now doing at Furman?

No sport at App can claim that, I'd say they are as close to doing so as anyone.
