I can totally accept that explanation. However, there is a faction of folks that don’t like Carolina because they feel like Carolina as an institution holds App back from growing and takes away resources that App should get. And in all honesty, as the flagship institution, they should have top priority. As BambooRdApp said, you can separate academics and athletics. I agree with this thought process. So if you want to hate Carolina because of the perception that they hold us back academically, then the same complaint should apply to State.AppWyo wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 2:59 pmState fans have their own unique misery, they just do not win enough to be annoying. Couldn't agree more, this is my least favorite argument on this board. You can't erase decades of rooting interest for your hometown, 100's of family memories traveling to games/TV watching, etc. just because you enroll somewhere else. App is where my money, time, passion, even my child now go, but I can have other rooting interests. App above all else, but I still care about the original.
I have no problem with people having rooting interest in multiple schools. I also cheer for my dad's alma mater (Xavier) and my wife's (VCU) - though neither play football so its easier - and when my girls go college, I will probably root for those schools too. (My youngest wants to go to Chapel Hill though so not them. But she is only 12 and can change her mind, while App is one of my 16 year old's top 2 so that is good).
But it will always App first as it should be.
What I don't really get (and didn't even get when I was kid) are people adopting a college team they have no connection to and supporting them so passionately. Its like "why do you care so much about some random minor league football team?" To each their own I guess.![]()

Where ever my daughters go it will be some place that lets them play a sport, so that won't be an option for me, but in general, you are spot on with that attitude.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 2:02 pmWhen my daughter attended NC State...I told her I separate academics from athletics..AppfaninCAALand wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 1:35 pmI hate the Tar Heels with all of my being, but I too agree. I grew up a Carolina fan long before I knew what App was. I root for several teams. I have two Carolina alumni that sit around me at App games and they root for App. One of our Hall of Fame football players has season tickets to both App and Carolina. I find that those that want to shame others for how they feel are the same ones that would get pi$$ed if they were told how to feel.

Re: College Football
This will get a little deep. But the psychology of someone pulling for a team that they have no connection is usually a team that wins often. It makes people feel good about themselves that their team won. Band wagon jumping is a sign of weakness in my mind. But it happens. I am lucky to have gone to App. We win a lot. Our bad seasons in baseball and basketball are rarely under 500.
Also...tv matters. The next 25 years will be interesting to see how sports change. ESPN will lose its grip. The Tarheel will be fine but some of the other ACC teams will struggle. Being in the ACC has carried their ability to be on TV. The Tarheels may struggle when they start losing and the walmart fan has to start paying to watch them play. M I was raised a Tarheel fan. My parents were walmart tar heel fans. Now that they have to pay to watch games (ACC network) they don't watch.
I think the best place to be is the best team I'm your conference and you need to find that level. It is like I tell my friends, you want to be the richest person in the country club you join.....not the poorest. Move down country clubs until you can be comfortable you are one of the richest in the club.

State fans and South Carolina fans live very similar lives. Even down to their most successful programs over the years being Women's Basketball. Yes, South Carolina had the Tanner years in baseball, but it's been a decade.AppWyo wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 2:59 pmState fans have their own unique misery, they just do not win enough to be annoying. Re: College Football
I was probably like many young people. My dad graduated from Wake so I leaned towards rooting for them for the most part. One of my brothers went to UNCG but has remained a Wake fan his whole life but I think he roots for any NC ACC team. I pretty much was the same and never really hated any team- other than the Cowboys growing up as I was a diehard Skins fan (more on that one in a bit). Once I went to App I was black and gold thru and thru. I still pull for the other ACC schools and with a son at App and one at NC State I love both (for now at least). I honestly never got into the Western Carolina deal back when we were somewhat rivals. Bottom line with me personally is no real hatred for any other college team. I get all of the “hate” for Carolina but that stuff people despise them for just doesn’t bother me.
Grew up a diehard Skins fan but I moved to Charlotte in the late 80’s. I was there when the Hornets came into existence and was a pretty big fan. I lost interest when they moved and have only had a passing interest once they came back. I became a Panthers fan immediately and have stuck with them for some reason. I’ve never been a bandwagon guy and I’ve never understood people with 3 “favorite teams”. All a choice but not for me.
