WVAPPeer wrote:Let me give one example and I think it encompasses why some have ill-feelings for UNC-Chapel Hill ---
When our daughter was a high school senior (and had already been accepted at APP) she was invited for an in-house at UNC-CH - she wasn't all that thrilled about going but her mother convinced her it always helps to view other "situations" - There was a group of about 40/50 parents and perspective students. One of the first questions asked the group was "who has been accepted at other colleges in NC?" - from that point forward the 2 "hosts" pretty much ignored those and concentrated on the "foreign exchange students" - Finally in a group session one father continued to try to ask some questions only to be ignored or put-off. Finally he stood up and said something to the effect of "Many of us have traveled from different parts of this state to be here today only to basically ignored by you two UNC employees - We pay your salaries and I am glad our daughter will not be attending here - We are leaving, anyone else want to join us?" --- At least 20 people walked out at that point including my wife (who has a Doctoral Degree in Education) and our daughter ( a proud APP grad) --- There is an arrogance there that they are better ---
Look, Duke is a better school - UNC-CH is NOT!!!
I know the feeling as I occasionally take seminars in the Department of Humanities at Chapel Hill. When they have the wine and cheese session at break, I can be carrying on a nice conversation with others taking the seminar. When one asks me where I went to school and I say "Appalachian," they suddenly clam up or start a conversation with someone else.

I only called the Tar Hole defenders douchebags. You and that other guy obviously took it personally because you are the only 2 Tar Heel lovers. Take note NWA, because we DO NOT have more Benedict Arnolds than UNCC (as you claim). I guarantee you the percentages are nearly equal. It's like a disease.AppSt94 wrote:I am so ashamed of myself. Re: Dual Fandom?
I was raised a UNC fan. But, when I became an adult (went to college), I put away childish things.
I'm an App State fan, and a fan of no other, because I spent 4 years of my life committed to Appalachian, and it saw well enough to give me a degree that has more than paid for itself through my wife, salaries, further educational opportunities, and a lifetime of past and future friends and memories. I can't say the same for any other school, and I wouldn't trade that for the world.
When it comes to Appalachian State, I'm all in.

Re: Dual Fandom?
Perhaps - my main point was that our basketball fans base, which until this past year was just about ALL of our passionate fans , had already turned their backs on Chapel Hill in their prime sport. Big Chapel Hill fans were not coming to any of our basketball games anyway. Any of our students that were Chapel Hill fans most likely did not have anything to do with any of our sports. App's fanbase is made up of football first fans who easily switch schools during the basketball season. The fact that App is a football school vs. a basketball school is the most likely primary driver. Now that we too have football it may be far more pronounced as fans that switch come basketball season. Given how our basketball team has done over the past decade we haven't done much to win them over either.Appftw wrote:I only called the Tar Hole defenders douchebags. I will say that when I arrived on campus in 1991 rarely did you see any Charlotte stuff and most kids were wearing other schools colors. That is totally reversed now - sure you see the random Chapel Hill or State shirt, but mostly it's all green. At least at both schools it seems that the fans of other schools have gone underground with their fandom for the most part. When I used to come to App in the early and mid 90s there was not near the pride that you all have now. Which is to be commended!
And yes it is disease... slowly we are all finding a cure for it though.

I will say this - having lived in Western Alamance and Eastern Guilford counties for a long, long time - the additional amount of APP stickers on cars/trucks and flags flying in front yards has increased a "million times over" (always have had problems with math) - anyway there's a hellofalotmore ---
